The country’s first federal immigration detainee to test positive for the coronavirus was released from the detention center at the Bergen County Jail to join his family Thursday afternoon, an official confirmed.
The 31-year-old Mexican man, whose name was not released, had complained of symptoms Monday before being confirmed positive hours later, said a spokesman for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, which manages the jail.
As of Thursday afternoon, the Mexican national was the only detainee to test positive for the coronavirus at the jail, said Sands. Two other detainees had been sent out to get tested Wednesday. One was diagnosed with a stomach virus and the other’s test came back negative, he said.
Immigrant rights groups and public defenders have called for the release of inmates and federal immigration detainees from jails as the coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen.
