County in rural Kansas is jailing people for medical debt

No. The VAST MAJORITY of people have debt and legally pay it back or legally declare bankruptcy.

These people, for many reasons, have not done that so the court needs to hold them accountable and that means meetings (Court Appearances).

Yes, I understand all that. These cases are specifically debt owed for healthcare. And whether it's for debt or for illegal gambling, if a person is in prison, he is in prison.

Once upon a time the human race evolved sufficiently to no longer imprison people for debt. Those days are gone in certain jurisdictions.

Doesn't make much difference. Contempt of court is contempt of court.

The folks in contempt are not required to pay anything to anyone as a condition of appearing or failing to appear.

Yes, I understand that. In this case, a person fails to pay his debt, and then fails to show up, so he is imprisoned. What began the process? His debt.

I suspect this situation will be resolved in a civil manner, but this is the Age of Trump with its attendant insanity.

It's an utterly idiotic law because the issue could be addressed a number of ways.

1. Notarized monthly statement
2. Phone bank
3. Online app

There are a zillion ways of maintaining compliance that do not require a bleeping courtroom.

The people in prison are not in prison for having debt. I just proved this by illustrating this.

That is true for many things, but lawyers make the laws to ensure the further enrichment of their fellow lawyers. In Texas many things must be e-filed and that generally means using a lawyer or some other Texas state certified e-file provider (for an appropriate and mandatory middle-man fee, of course).

I plead exculpatory circumstances your honor. I would have paid my bills with equal protection of the laws for unemployment compensation in our at-will employment States. I should be able to obtain unemployment compensation for being naturally unemployed on an at-will basis in our at-will employment States. Two wrongs do not make a right. I am not vested with any judicial Power of the United States for full faith and credit purposes. Equal protection of the laws is in our State Constitution and State supreme law of the land in any conflict of laws in our sovereign, free State.

Did you just suffer an out of body experience?

What you posted is nice, but utterly unconnected to what we're discussing.

Actually, what began the process was incurring the debt. No debt, no debtor.

When I was in school, it took me a while longer than some to graduate. I crammed four years into six. I graduated with no debt because I worked full time while going to school full time.

In passing, I knew a guy who seemed to be pretty well off that told a story of how he watched as his late model Corvette was towed away by Repo Man.

ALL purchases are made with the consent of the purchaser.

There is a role played by personal choice in the act of making personal decisions.

For decades men have been put in jail for not paying child support. How is that any different?

SIAP. The politics of not paying child support (of a father not being supportive to a child) is bad and is why those dads are jailed.

BTW if you haven't figured this out, the reason for this thread is to shame the legal system for jailing those who can't pay medical debt.

You offered a semantic exercise perhaps formed by some measure of denial. You proved nothing.

They are in prison for having failed to show up at a court proceeding regarding their debt to healthcare providers.

I don't agree with this at all. Locking someone up for a debt doesn't solve the issue.
by the sounds of this looks like a racket protection job.

they are getting locked up for failure to appear but forcing someone every three months to take off work
if they can and go to court is what most would consider undo burden.

I understand those that can't pay medical debts or other debts.
i have been in that situation were it was like crap 2k dollar emergency room visit.
it got paid but it is still a pain and we basically told the hospital we will make payments.

You changed your goal posts to make it sound better but this is really the answer... even though you have it correct you insisted on muddying it up with the other crap for some reason.

Nobody is being jailed for not paying a medical debt...

Many times the truth is offensive to some. Many prefer to fool themselves.

If it weren't for their medical debt, those people would not be brought to court in the first place.
