Sexual predator Pirate is free and living in Northern California

No. I didn't say we can't do anything about it. I said I don't know what can be done.

"Is this mic on? Is everyone in the back able to hear me?"

My state can and does hold some violent sexual predators prisoner in mental institutions under civil commitment orders once they are released from prison. I find it theoretically unacceptable albeit a very practical solution I suppose.

A sexually violent predator named Pirate is free and back in Redding, though he has reportedly told police he does not feel safe there because of community scrutiny.

Daniel Selovich, 40, who legally changed his name to Pirate, was recently released from prison in Nevada, where he was serving a sentence for the 2004 rape of a disabled woman in a motel room.

A terse statement Sunday from the Redding Police Department said: “We are aware that Daniel Selovich (Pirate) is back in Redding. He was contacted by officers earlier in the day and is not currently wanted for any crimes.”

Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Cogle elaborated to TV station KRCR: “I know it’s worrying to know that he is on the streets but he is a free man. You have to treat him like every other man you see on the street. … At this point he has paid his debt for what he’s been convicted of.”

Cogle said Pirate told the police he doesn’t feel safe. He is easily identifiable because of his full-face tattoo.

The man had left Redding shortly after a 2004 rape of which he was suspected. He was finally arrested six years later in New Mexico and was sentenced to four years for the Redding rape.

Released in 2015, Pirate moved to Alaska. There, he was accused of holding a woman captive for five weeks at a remote cabin and repeatedly torturing and sexually assaulting her. When the alleged victim died of a drug overdose shortly before the trial was to start, the charges were dismissed.

DNA evidence in that case, however, linked Pirate to the 2004 Las Vegas attack. He was extradited to Nevada, where he pleaded guilty in 2018 to reduced charges.

Sentenced to up to five years, he was released in late 2019. In December, he was seen in Fairbanks, where a concerned resident posted photos and warnings on Facebook. From there, he apparently moved back to Redding.

No rapist should have so short a prison sentence that he is young enough for his prostate gland to still be in working condition when he is released.

What do you propose we do about it?

Here is my suggestion for dealing with convicted rapists and violent sexual offenders: Keep them in prison until they are old and their testosterone levels drop to the point that they have neither the energy or the libido to rape anyone. Then we can talk about parole. Most rapists do their raping in their younger years (mainly in their thirties and forties), but seem to drop off in their late fifties. We cannot expect people to grow consciences. But we have a fair understanding of what the human body is capable of. So do not let any rapist under the age of 60 have a parole board hearing. Maybe wait until 65, just to be safe. That way they can collect their Social Security when they are finally released.

What morality, empathy and decency cannot prevent, nature will.

Exactly. What is the good solution? Keep them in prisons forever while we're paying them for bed, food and their comfort?

The taxpayers are going to have to foot the bill for this rapist either in prison or out of prison.

If out of prison do you really picture "Pirate" working 40 hours a week at Home Depot and joining the local Kiwanis club ?

No, he will rely on crime, food stamps, and panhandling for his living expenses. And very likely to ruin somebody else's life.

Am sorry but just out of sympathy today for scum.

Food stamps? He will have to work while on EBT.

Or voluntary medical castration.

My ancestors are from Cornwall. They had this thing they called "rough music". Basically, the locals would follow the transgressor around banging pots and pans, 24/7, until he left town.

That would certainly piss me off. Bet I could outlast them though, especially now that we have ear buds.

I wonder if people in this thread realize that premeditated murder doesn't become OK because the target is scum.

It really does amaze me how blind people are to their own violent lusts. Any article about a terrible crime will produce comment after comment filled with people fantasizing about killing the subject or someone else doing it. And they actually seem to think that having wet daydreams about someone's death is righteous.

If the victim he kept in a remote Alaskan cabin and sexually tortured for 5 weeks hadn't died before the trial we wouldn't be having this discussion.

You truly don't believe he won't harm someone again?

What? How about a straight answer to what I said, which was about the moral mess of people gushing about how they'd like to see the bad man die while thinking it righteous to do so?

I said nothing about what I think of the probability of re-offense. I am responding to these daydreams of how this person should/might die.

Well?

If we're not happy he was released because we're sure he'll do it again, then we - or the citizens of the relevant state - need to have a discussion about maximum penalties and release in certain circumstances like this. But not fantasizing about how he might be killed or sharing daydreams about doing it ourselves.

Sure, killing in self-defense or defense of another is fine. But not killing simply because someone did something evil. Then the question is what punishment to levy. Are you disagreeing with that or was there a misunderstanding?

Let's us start with the fact that I have a family member who was raped years ago. The consequences of that act continues to cause pain to them.

To the people who say but that was years ago can kiss my ass.

These 1 to 5 year sentences are a joke.

As for any violent thoughts I have. What is the first thing people say when a pedophile goes to prison? The very first thing is that they say is "Just wait to the other prisoners find out he is a pedophile". That's it, let the prisoners do the job that we as society didn't have the guts to do.

Perhaps we don't want him killed for what he did but rather killed so there aren't more innocent victims. More destroyed lives and families.

It is what it is.

He's in the most welcoming state in the USA for his history. It's a good sanctuary for him.

Then we had better keep the criminals in prisons forever.

If they have a strong potential to reoffend yes.

Prisons should have three functions

Punishment
Rehabilitation
and protecting society.

This guy failed at rehab and is likely to reoffend and should remain in jail until he can not

In a psychology class I had in college a clinical psychologist teaching the class said in his 30+ years of experience in the field there really is no cure for sexual predators like this. He was very blunt honest about his feelings and just would tell you the way things really were. Although he had his PhD in clinical psychology he had told the class in his personal opinion violent sexual offenders should all be put to death and he had a deep hatred for them. He called them a hazard to society that would just continue committing sex crimes till the day they died and no amount of clinical help would reduce their urges to commit crimes. He pretty much said they are really messed up in the head and can't be cured.

This man should get police protection so that he is not harmed by violent members of that hick community.

Good plan... send the guy off to some unsuspecting town so that he can have unsuspecting prey...

You have to remember that this was Cornwall, where they hate the neighboring village more than they hate the dude they're running off.

It's win-win.

He should try to blend in and become a wholesome member of Redding’s meth lap culture.

And because of the drug infrastructure, he is probably going to be killed for drawing attention to Redding. There are so few teeth left in Redding a dentist can’t make a living!

It's so bizarre to visit these tiny northern California towns that we once considered boring retirement villages not long ago, and see how dreg culture has changed them. As a kid in the 90s, we used to visit Redding, Eureka, and Auburn to get away from the big city for a day or two. These were sleepy little outposts then, they felt like a piece of Small Town USA in California. They're barely inhabitable only two decades later, ravaged by meth, unemployment, poverty and dregs. Exactly the kind of place you would expect to see someone like Pirate the Rapist.

Been to Clear Lake lately? It looks as if the parole department dumps them off there!

Bill Clinton and his spotted owl kneecapped a lot of small towns that relied on the timber industry.

California is going to resemble an African or Latin American banana republic sooner than later in a few years. The left doesn't need the middle class just like dictators in other countries just need poor, misinformed, emotional masses to stay in power and keep the few and the wealthy on top. This is the leftist model they want for the rest of the USA and they ain't kidding - their is a reason they love China.

From the article

.

It can't be argued the dude did his time.
Now, I would never encourage any sort of violence, like beating the guy up. However, women who live anywhere near him should carry the necessary tools to defend themselves while perhaps reducing his "urges" at the same time.
