CHICAGO (FOX 32 NEWS) - A Cook County judge selected former U.S. attorney Dan Webb to be the special prosecutor overseeing the investigation into the handling of the Jussie Smollett case.

Webb is arguably Chicago's most high-profile defense attorney of the last few decades and has been tapped five times previously to serve as a special prosecutor. Webb gained prominence for his lead role during the Operation Greylord investigations into judicial corruption in Cook County.

"I don't know where this case is going. The facts will take me where I they take me," he said, adding that he couldn't provide a precise timetable but would move the investigation along as quickly as possible.

Good.

The little **** needs to be held accountable in some regard for the damage he did.

While this additional special prosecutor may be needed I would suggest that the costs of it come from the regular prosecutor's office budget - fire an equivalent amount of folks to make this become budget neutral.

More damage was done by those who made this special prosecutor's appointment necessary. How many other criminal cases were "disappeared" by those clowns running that "just us" system?

I think it is a waste of time, energy and money fooling with the Smollet case. Yes, certainly some trivial rule or law was broken, but he has been shamed and will likely never be hired again as an actor. His career is ruined, as well it should be.

What purpose will be served if he is prosecuted and imprisoned for such a petty offense?

One word.... Consequence! Play stupid games win stupid prizes! It was not petty... he tried and succeed for a short to stir up more racial hate because of the lie he told. This was a planned and premeditated crime.
Jail time is up to a jury or a judge.

Pray tell WHAT damage did he do?
He tried to make trump supporters out to be racists. Seems to be a double standard going on and yes he should be prosecuted for all of his crimes.

Further down in the article Foxx attempts to play the race card as well
Foxx has said*Smollett was treated no differently*than thousands of other defendants in low-level cases whose charges have been similarly dropped. Foxx also publicly wondered if her being black has anything to do with the criticism she has received.

Is it fair for others to publicly wonder if her being black has anything to do with her decission to not prosecute him?

Maybe we should investigate her record as a prosecutor and see if she prosecutes whites more aggressively than blacks, since she raised the question of her race being a factor in this.

A petty crime with no victim. It will waste more time and effort to prosecute him than it is worth.

OMG, cry me a river!

Yet, it seems that is not what is being investigated. I say forget recharging Smollett, and investigate the folks who dumped that and likely many other cases.
Im not sure if your right about that. It said they are investigating the HANDLING of the case. That implies they are looking at the prosecing office as well as the police.
The problem i have is that most of the time they will just say that they found the case was handled in an unusaul way but they found no evidence of wrong doing and give everyone a big fat pass. Then they will declare the case is settled and tell everyone to move on.

There are many victims only you don't want to accept that conclusion. He lied many times to the police during an official investigation.... a felony! NOT a petty crime in the least!

Disorderly conduct is normally thought of as a low-level crime. In Illinois, however, making false reports to peace officers is actually a felony contained within the disorderly statute. A false report is a class four felony, punishable by up to three years in prison. The elements that make it such a felony are: any kind of transmission to a peace officer reporting a crime without reasonable grounds.

False and misleading information indicating an act of terrorism is not a harmless lie. Diverting law enforcement to devote unnecessary resources and causing citizens to fear a fatal terrorist attack is the sort of harm that Congress has a legitimate right to prevent by restricting speech.

Why charges against Jussie Smollett are considered a felony

Yes, petty felonies, how horrid.

Would his telling lies be equal to or greater than the lies told by John Brennan or Mr. Clapper when they perjured themselves before Congress, on TV?

As they were not punished for their perjury, why should Smollet be treated any differently? Because he is just a civilian and not an "esteemed leader" being paid from the US Treasury?

What is the difference?

Much ado about nothing is what this proposal is. Spending the money time and effort will not restore the rule of law in this country. It will not protect the public from anything at all.

All it will demonstrate is just how wasteful and petty the criminal justice system can be, and how unequally the law is applied in this country.
