Following Another Water Incident, Assemblymen Propose Law Making Disrespecting Police A Felony – CBS New York

The most recent incident in Queens has compelled lawmakers to announce a new bill that cracks down on anyone who disrespects the badge, CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge reported.
Police are on the hunt for a person caught on camera throwing water at traffic cops, who are seen just doing their jobs on a corner in Woodhaven.
There have been at least four separate cases in recent weeks of citizens showing contempt for officers, prompting some fed-up lawmakers to say enough is enough. They want anyone who does it to go to jail.
I get that we need to respect police officers, but a FELONY for disrespect, nope nope nope. No way no how, would I support that. Having your career ruined, and other important life situations ruined over disrespect. I mean this is a slippery slope that police could take way too far. Imagine a police officer calling your wife a slut, and you have to say "Thank you, officer" so he doesn't charge you with a feloney because really you'd like to take his head off.

I could see charging the water throwers with assault, but I don't support making some undefined "disrespect" a felony.

Seems to me there are laws already on the books regarding assaulting a police officer. I would think that is enough.

And I am with you about slippery slopes.

Just arrest the people who are assaulting these police officers. Period.

As it is, the potential for full scale violence has been turned up by the lack of response to these assaults.

That's not good.

Last night, protesters erupted during Bill DeBlasio's opening statement. Those voices were shouting “Fire Pantaleo, Fire Pantaleo,” The protesters continued to chant as Cory Booker took the floor to deliver his opening statement, causing him to pause before the protesters were eventually removed from the theater. Their protest comes weeks after news broke that prosecutors would not be charging New York police officer Daniel Pantaleo, the man blamed for the death of Eric Garner.

The city of New York can come up with any silly law they want, like this one that will never pass as a law. But what NY and the rest of the country should be aware of is that in many cases, police just do not respect the people they serve. When a police office acts with contempt or disrespect for minorities, they will get disrespect back, that's how human nature works. I'm sure that it's part of any policeman's training that cautions him about disrespecting people in their districts. But there are some that feel the power they have behind the badge and gun, and it makes them aggressive and more likely to use physical force rather than tolerance and patience.

When I was a kid, we had one or two cops that 'walked the beat'. They were our own cops. We knew their names and they knew all of our names. There was a relationship there and respect. Those days are far behind us because now police drive around neighborhoods in cars there's no personal contact with those they protect and it changed the dynamics. Respect is a two-way street.

Norman Rockwell would have never believed it.

A high dollar fine and some community service should be used here....but not a felony.
Disrespect for stupid politicians is a given, though...

No way that such a bill could pass -- in any state.

The bleeding heart activists would start screaming "Discrimination!"

So those thugs know that they are safe. The closest thing to any kind of punishment would be probation.

Keep seeing (on FOX, of course. The other channels are too "woke" to show it) clips of these smirking hoods throwing water on law enforcement. The hoods even proudly post their videos on social media so that their fellow hoods can watch in envy.

"According to LiPetri and Reilly, the new bill would make it a Class E felony to throw or spray water, or any other substance, against an on-duty police or peace officer. The charge would be punishable by up to 1 to 4 years in prison."

Congratulations on automatically believing a fake news headline.

I agree, no felony.
However, they could be charged with battery which they should be if they are going to do something stupid like throw water at someone.

Does the bill actually say disrespecting officers should be a felony, or is that merely the headline? Not wanting to argue, but the article isn't very factual.

Yeah, depending on the nature of the assault it would follow normal law.

CBS lied to me?

So you're confirming it's a felony.

You can be arrested for flipping the bird. That's been in effect since the '70s. It is however a misdemeanor.
