Mostly because the new DA won't be prosecuting most crimes.

DA Creuzot letter to the people of Dallas County

Misdemeanor possession of weed? Won't be prosecuted.
Flipping Xanax on the corner? No jail until it comes back from testing and then you get a ticket instead of a warrant.
Homeless sleeping in front of your business? Too bad for you! It's "inhumane" to run them off.
That homeless person sleeping in front of your store just stole 20 cases of beer? Nobody's going to prosecute that because theft of personal items less than $750 is now legal in Dallas County. Well, it's not really legal but nobody is going to prosecute it.
Is your license suspended? Feel free to drive. Nobody is going to prosecute stuff like that.
Are you looking at probation? Don't sweat it. Nobody is going to ask for anything significant. Your lower level felonies won't get more than 6 months probation.
Do you need to come up with bail? Not in Dallas County! Low level felons with no convictions in the last 5 years are to be released on their own recognizance.

Good luck, Dallas County! Something tells me you're going to need it.

This type of "social justice warrior" City Attorneys and District Attorneys is spreading all over. Jussy Smollett's favor City Attorney is a prime example. Scary stuff.

Finally, someone has come up with a way to officially reduce crime - simply don't prosecute so many criminals.

None of us are going to notice a god damn thing, these are such petty offenses that typically can't be controlled anyways.

It just means more room for violent offenders.

Seriously? Not investigating thefts of personal property under $750 will unleash a torrent of petty theft. Ignoring vagrancies just means more ****-piles and pisspools to dodge. Those laws were enacted for a reason.

If the police will not remove (or arrest) folks that decide to "camp" on your property (or steal it in "small" amounts at a time) then that may increase violence as folks decide that they must take action themselves.

Exaggeration and hyperbole.
As to the refusal of the DA to "prosecute theft of personal items less than $750 unless the evidence shows that the alleged theft was for economic gain":
You're in Texas. If the bastard is stealing your stuff, shoot them.
That's what I would have done back when I used to live in Texas, and that's what I would do right here in Southern California.

You won't be charged with a crime for shooting a thief and you'll save everybody a lot of taxpayer dollars.

If the police will not remove (or arrest) folks that decide to "camp" on your property (or steal it in "small" amounts at a time) then that may increase violence as folks decide that they must take action themselves.

Especially in Texas

Like I said, if it's your property, you're within your rights to resort to elevated means to inspire them to leave.
What's wrong with you people, you live IN Texas and one of the few good things about that state is the fact that you actually have the right to shoot bad guys if they're committing a crime on your property.

Besides, that will get the cops to your address very quickly, and they'll probably thank you for taking out the trash.

They didn't say that shop lifters won't be prosecuted. The DA said that people who are clearly destitute who steal items like diapers and food, will not be prosecuted, so get your panties out of their wad.

I live in Dallas and I've heard the DA speak about this.

Just making an observation, no wadding involved. Be sure to watch your step, however.

Where the heck is the justice for the person that was the victim of their property being stolen?
Where is the justice for the hard working business owner having to put up with vagrants sprawled out in front of their places of business?
Where is the justice for the person who follows the law driving down the road and gets hit by some asshole with no license and no insurance?

700,000 in goods could mean a person's livelihood. Having to make claims to your insurance over damages to your car or personal injuries from a frigging unlicensed driver that will no longer be prosecuted not only raises their insurance premiums but will never get restitution for any injury sustained by the person that was allowed to skate free on driving without a license.

This is bull ****.

The Texas law is not quite clear on legally shooting thieves during the daytime (they do seem to be "fair game" at night) and clearly does not allow shooting trespassers (who do not break into your home/business).

What kind of Texas is this? Hell, when I was in H.S. there were Texans being locked-up for years for a few joints! Yeah, was a long time ago; but still.

Then it should be clear.
I had a pretty clear idea of the law back when I lived there. The cops made it clear that I would be within my rights if I shot someone stealing my stuff. Glad I never had to, but I would have.

Under the new law people who steal diapers and food for their families, who are clearly poor, are simply made to return the items, and directed to services to obtain those items lawfully.

If you try to steal a TV or something, you still go to jail for that. But people in hardship situations are now shown some compassion, much to the anger of people like yourself.

So wouldn't the workaround be to wait until night, and call them a 'thief'? :2razz:

On that issue I am actually still something of a bleeding heart libtard.
But it would be helpful if states would enact more policies that make it easier for supermarkets to donate food that would normally go bye bye in the dumpster despite being perfectly okay.
People who are destitute should not HAVE to resort to stealing food and diapers.
They should be able to avail themselves of numerous state assisted resources, which can function as public/private partnerships.

what they need to do is decriminalize crap that has no business being criminalized.

Far as I can tell Texas has not rescinded their insurance laws so if they're caught driving without insurance, they still lose their car.
