The village is the site of a former settlement for leprosy patients. The original leper colony was first established in Kalawao in the east, opposite to the village corner of the peninsula. It was there where Father Damien settled in 1873. Later it was moved to the location of the current village, which was originally a Hawaiian fishing village. The settlement was also attended by Mother Marianne Cope, among others. At its peak, about 1,200 men, women, and children were in exile in this island prison. The isolation law was enacted by King Kamehameha V and remained in effect until 1969, when it was finally repealed.

Kalaupapa is located on the Kalaupapa Peninsula at the base of some of the highest sea cliffs in the world; they rise 2,000 feet (610 m) above the Pacific Ocean. In the 1870s a community to support the leper colony was established here; the legislature required people with severe cases to be quarantined on this island in the hope of preventing contagious transmission of the disease.

Kalaupapa[2] is a small unincorporated community on the island of Molokaʻi, within Kalawao County in the U.S. state of Hawaii.

Do you think this is inhumane, unconstitutional, a violation of individual human rights or good in some way?

Quarantines may be a necessity and are routinely used to contain the spread of disease.

Although I cannot believe in God, I am glad that the Catholic Church has made Father Damien a saint. He is a model for young people to pattern themselves on. The only purpose in this nightmare called life is to help other human beings, isn't it?

I think that putting leprosy patients on the island was a good thing:

1. People with leprosy would live in what we now call a safe zone where they would not be shunned by the general population.

2. People with leprosy would not accidentally spread the disease to the general population.

I believe that Cuba for a while made all people with HIV live together. The difference, however, is that the Cuban government treated the HIV patients very cruelly while Saint Damien treated his patients with kindness.

Nowadays there is concern over the homeless who sleep on public sidewalks along with the unsanitary conditions that ensue. Some people may think that it would be "inhumane" to require them to move to special shelters. I feel that it would be a win-win for the homeless and the general population if the homeless were gently removed from the streets.

I read The Lost Tribe of Coney Island where there was located another leper colony island prison.
