Protesters topple Silent Sam Confederate statue at UNC

...
They hate this country and want to see it torn apart and are doing their best to see it happen.
Trump hate is just a wave they are riding on. In four or eight years they will find some other wave to ride.
Bringing down the United States is their main goal.

Exactly. These same type idiots were doing the same crap when Obama was President, and will be continuing to do so long after Trump leaves the White House.

Or how about letting a mob publicly horse whip a "white wench" of whom objected to the statue being torn down to even the score?
Shall we have a POLL to see how many would approve of this too?
That white racist slept with a shotgun because he needed to. I hope the bastid met justice one day.

These current white racists also hate white people and feel just as justified as that bastid did.
Don't think for one second they have "love of country" at heart.
They just want to cause a second civil war and hate the United States.

These same people that tear down statues also burn American flags.

Boy, it sure does take a long time to bring the country down.
I guess they should have hired Osama Bin Laden when they had the chance.

The last of the supersized Confederate "lawn jockeys".
Of course, this is a minor one because it was erected with private funds, and the school pays the upkeep.
The ones that truly offend are on public property and maintained with taxpayer monies.

Many of them are simply too damn big to move, so perhaps the compromise is this:
It's bad enough that black folks have to look at them every time they go into town, but I'd be damned if I was a black worker knowing a portion of my paycheck, even a penny, went to cleaning the bird guano off of these slaver monuments. Let these sons and daughters of the Confederacy pay the upkeep and the property taxes for these statues.
If they respect them so much, let THEM show their respect by paying the bills.

No apologetics will ever work on me, so don't even try. I've lived down there, so I know it's BS.

Well if the school cared that much they can always make a new one. Methinks the pissant politicians will just cower in fear and not do anything about it.

...and I also agree the pissant school administrators have the backbone of a chocolate eclair.
THAT is the reason this happened.

I don't see the Governor calling for arrests. So we'll just have to wait and see:

The governor is a sniveling sidestepping bent-back Democrat (not just a Democrat, I have respect for many Democrats) that relies on these assholes and those like them as part of his constituency to re-elect him. Plus, it isn't the job of the NC Governor to do so. It's the Chapel Hill police or the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) or maybe even the FBI.

Cooper is probably a one term governor.

That sounds like a very reasonable compromise and a workable solution.

...but NO ONE will ever convince me mob action is the solution to anything.
It only fuels the anger already present.

Opinions of why a certain thing exists do not define how everyone must also. We cannot define what we are today by what happened 105 years ago, or 150 years ago.

We must not fall prey to the idiocy of believing that we must destroy our past to save our future.
Contradiction in terms, if we are not defined by our past, then we are rejecting our past.

So is the country going down the tubes or is it already? You aren't making much sense with your conspiracies about how the cops aren't doing their jobs because of asshole democrats.

DISCUSSION OVER
You have thrown reason and civility right out the window.

Flaming and trolling me in this thread does not advance the discussion.

Correction: You were the one who claimed that college students are part of a massive coordinated left-wing plan to destroy the country, not me.

While I understand the bitter feeling towards what people view as signs of institutional racism/racism in general, destroying this statue is not going to solve anything and the people guilty of it need to be found, arrested and prosecuted for criminal vandalism and damaging private property.

What did I just watch?

They need to get some lessons in how to protest peacefully and without vandalising private property.

Carrying on like a bunch of morons. They just look stupid. When you act like that in any kind of protest, any message that you are attempting to send is just lost because you then become the topic. Not the cause you started out protesting to begin with.

Were they cast on site? Many date to about 1930, has our ability to move heavy things decreased?

That stature was created by noted Canadian sculptor John A. Wilson in 1913. He can't make another one any more than Michelangelo can create another David because he's, um, dead. :violin:

Oh I'm not applauding the mob action, I'm just never going to buy the sanitized and homogenized back story...of ANY of these monuments.
Nobody had any business putting them up on public property. As it happens this one, on a campus, isn't quite public property. But if you're a black student, can the college prove that not a single penny of your tuition didn't help pay for its upkeep, or do all the "negro wenches" on campus have to defer their eyes and bow to all the "Suth-uhn lay-dehz" when they pass, lest they be whipped?

Everybody has hurt feelings on this issue but the folks who felt the real pain are all dead and a lot of them are buried in unmarked graves, put down like beasts of the field, which is how they were treated.
I cannot lose sight of that.

I apologize if I left you the impression I was saying you supported the mob action.
I was only making a general comment and did not direct it to you, a fellow analog fossil.
I have had my own personal history with the Klan and hate them at a deep personal level.
With me it does not go back generations, but happened with me in my real life.
but that is another story.

I am just saying I can not and will never condone ANY mob actions.
Be they Klan, Antifa, or or anyone else, no matter how "noble" they think their cause is.

Most people can find injustices in their past generations and probably don't have to go that far back.

MOB ACTIONS do not fix anything, but instead will only iron the resolve of those the hate is directed at.
I swear i will post a rebel flag on my front porch the next time i hear about any more of this southern hate being perpetuated by the intolerant south haters.
Crap like this is pushing a very tolerant man to be just the opposite.

Depending on your point of view, the statue may either honor brave students and others who fought in the “Lost Cause” or the same folk who committed treason and actually fought to preserve a system where some people could buy and sell others. At least the mob didnt hang the statue by its neck from a tree. I say let the statue stay, but surround it with memorials to the 101 people (86 black) lynched by mob action in NC from the end of the war through 1968. Each year have a public discussion on the site of the various actors’ then and now and their motivations.

Right there with you. I was not terribly interested in my family tree until recently. This whole rash of vandalism has motivated me to begin the process of joining the Sons Of Confederate Veterans. Must be a male descendant of a serviceman that served in the CSA and was KIA or honorably discharged.

Doesn't matter what your point of view is. These monuments should be respected, just as the WWII Allies respect German war memorials. I don't see Jews running all over Europe destroying German memorials. If anyone would have cause to object to them, I would think it would be Jews. They just know the difference between objecting to Nazism and idiocy.
