People in the MGTOW arena are up in arms over this. Some are saying that Nottinghamshire's "Misogyny Law" prohibits speaking to a woman in a way that makes her uncomfortable, up to including saying anything at all if she considers one an undesirable. They say it sets a speak only when spoke to standard. Here's what the UK Telegraph says on the matter:

Treating misogyny as a hate crime is a 'waste of time' officers say as police record one conviction over two years

Officers said it “incorporated some behaviours that were fairly trivial, did not warrant a police response and that it involved a waste of resources without being backed by a mandate from the public”.

One officer said that it “felt like a vanity project”.

“I just think if someone wolf whistles you when you walk past a building site, “So what? Really?” If someone came up to me in a gym and said “you look good in your lycra” I’d take it – ‘thanks!’

“I can see where they are going with it but I feel sorry for blokes because they must be confused by what they can and can’t say, and it’s alright for women is it to go ‘cor you look..’ because there’s nothing the other way round and women do it just as much as men do it, it’s acceptable to, so I just struggle with the whole thing.”

I don't like personal remarks from strangers, myself. I don't get them anymore. I'm 68 and consider it a perk of aging. I don't think it should be a crime though. You'd have to lock up a huge chunk of the male population. Totally impractical. What's needed are clear lines of what is and is not acceptable.

AND not make the prohibitions gender specific. Also, I recommend visiting and getting to know the people in a totalitarian regime. It's not necessary to lock up huge chunks of the male population, only to create a climate of fear. Men will eventually learn to be seen and not heard and only speak when spoken to.

Women too... you should hear the compliments and desires from women as I walk by...

People in the MGTOW arena think women should stay bent over while making them a sandwich, and somehow still manage to wonder why they don't get laid. Who cares what they think? Why even mention them if the article is quoting police officers speaking about the subject?

A significant section of MGTOW is made up of "pick up artists". Some put time limits on seeing the same woman, 60 or perhaps 90 days. You're confusing MGTOW with incel. Police are part of the enforcement of the law and see its effects on the ground.

MMmm....no, no I don't think I am confusing MGTOW and incel. (I'd also note that "but they're pickup artists" doesn't change much of anything either).

I'm questioning why MGTOW and incel even needs to be brought up period. A law that makes misogyny illegal and a hate crime is a law that only targets one gender and seems like it would be the real "news" that should be discussed.

That's where I heard about it. Furthermore, posts are supposed to contain personal commentary and not just be a "copy and paste" job.

Men should know better than to catcall in this day and age. It still doesn’t merit calling the cops.

Not sure how hate crimes work in the UK, but in the US the label hate crime is applied after the crime has been committed. Being verbally abusive to someone is not a "hate crime" because it is not a crime at all. Being verbally abusive to someone and then committing an actual crime could potentially render it a hate crime, depending on the language used. You can call someone any discriminatory name you want and you can't be arrested for that alone. Call them a name and then assault them, or stalk them, or disturb the peace, or trespass, and you may be guilty of a hate crime.
