Rapper who Lynched White Child in Video Shot Dead in Florida

I have played guitar, in some capacity, for nearly 50 years. I have owned over 400 guitars, still own about 35 guitars, have been to more concerts than I can name, mainly just to hear the guitarists & to see what they are doing when they do their 'jobs.' I have seen so many players live I couldn't name them. Many of these musicians were into the drug scene & some didn't live long lives.

I try and separate the art from the artist & the recreational use of 'drugs.' Some folks look at music as a life style, some look at it as a way to make 'connections' but I'm just into music. I constantly look for music & musical acts to explore music. I agree that drugs are there but one doesn't have to make it about drugs. Drugs are a choice in life, with, or without music.

You're right about drugs being a part of the music scene for a long time. Dying from overdose has been a common theme in the lives of American musicians, going way back to Janis Joplin & Jimi Hendrix 50 years ago. But what about the violence that accompanies rap music today? The rock bands of the 1970's didn't create a venue for gun violence like today's rappers do.

In many ways, Onfroy's continued commercial viability is a testament to what accused assailants can still get away with in the court of public opinion, especially when their victims — like Onfroy's — are low-income and women of color.

In the aftermath of the homicide, police said they suspected the murder of XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, might have been a robbery gone wrong — a suspicion echoed by X's friends, who told New Times they weren't aware of any ongoing beefs serious enough to lead to a daylight shooting.

Williams' arrest seems to confirm the killing was related to a theft.

I almost needed a translator to understand the point he was making. I wasn't sure if it was English or not. I'm probably losing a few points with St. Peter for speaking ill of the dead, but every once in a while I throw caution to the wind and make an exception for those deserving of the honor.

Most rap is just bad poetry set to a monotonous beat.

He sounds like he was a true loser, not so much because he created the controversial video (it was fake, after all) but because it appears he was violent.

Artists -- real or self-perceived -- can be quite odd, I've found, and sometimes they do shocking things to get their points across. I would not watch the video, and I don't think rap is even qualified to be called "music." But, I'm not aghast at the symbolism in the video.

I rather agree with you that there is such a thing as 'real art'. But how to draw the line between the 'real' and the 'fake'? Maybe it is so subjective that each one of us needs to draw our own line. Mine would leave pretty well all rap 'music' on the non-art side.
