Video Shows Border Patrol SUV Hitting Native American Man, Then Driving Away

6/15/18

ALBUQUERQUE — Tensions flared on Friday between federal authorities in Arizona and residents of a Native American reservation straddling the border with Mexico after a video surfaced in which a Border Patrol vehicle appears to hit a man from the tribe before driving away. The video, which was recorded on the phone of the victim, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation identified as Paulo Remes, spread quickly on social media after several tribe members and Indivisible Tohono, an organization focused on the impact of border policies, posted the footage on Twitter and Facebook. “They just ran me over, bro,” Mr. Remes is heard saying on the video. He told The Arizona Daily Star that he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries from the incident, which took place on Tohono O’odham land about 60 miles southwest of Tucson. Mr. Remes appeared to be standing in a dirt road facing the vehicle when it made contact, knocking him to the ground. Mr. Remes told the newspaper that the driver of the vehicle did not stop.

The United States Border Patrol said in a statement that it was “actively investigating” the incident. “We do not tolerate misconduct on or off duty and will fully cooperate with all investigations of alleged unlawful conduct by our personnel,” the Border Patrol said. Robert G. Daniels, a spokesman in Arizona for the Border Patrol, said the agency was not able to release the identity of the agent involved in the episode; the video seems to show the vehicle speeding away after the victim is hit. “All I can say is that this incident is under investigation,” Mr. Daniels said.

I guess we're not done killing the native Americans yet?

Well if Democrats would just build a wall around Native Americans, we'd stop hitting them.

It sure looks like he hit the man, but, the video only shows a view that goes skewed right before the truck got to him which means he could have jumped or fell to the side and not actually been hit.

Are there any pictures or videos that show any injuries? Like bruises or cuts or scrapes? Medical records? I'm not a lawyer and even I can come up with enough "reasonable doubt" from watching that video that a jury, or especially a judge, would have a hard time convicting the officer.

I hope the guy has more evidence than just that video.

If he actually went to the hospital, there should be proof positive.

I doubt highly, the guy driving was trained in any way to run anyone over. And the border patrol statement came out pretty strongly in favor of investigating and condemning the act.

They can't be blamed for how one person acted outside of their code of conduct, unless they try and brush it off or cover it up.

I know we are ticked off at Immigration policies, but it's not the actual border patrol housing these kids, or causing them to be separated. That's HHS. Border Patrol agents from the information I've seen are in favor of not criminally charging asylum seekers and many say finding those who need asylum was the most rewarding part of their job. They don't like arresting people. It puts them in danger over something they used to be proud of.

Let's see how it plays out, I think Border Patrol will do the right thing.
