North Korea: Otto Warmbier's family sues over son's death

A clearly disoriented Otto Warmbier being released by North Korea

4/27/128

The parents of a US student who died days after his release from a North Korean prison are suing Pyongyang. Otto Warmbier was arrested in January 2016 for stealing a propaganda sign. North Korea has denied mistreating the 22-year-old student, but his parents insist that his death in July 2017 was the consequence of torture. The lawsuit comes at a key moment for US-North Korean relations, ahead of a planned meeting between the two countries' leaders in the coming weeks. The wrongful-death suit was filed in a federal court in Washington DC. Mr Warmbier's parents are seeking damages over what they describe as "the hostage taking, illegal detention, torture and killing" of their son. They say that he was forced to make a false confession before being "brutally tortured and murdered". Although foreign countries are usually protected from lawsuits in US courts by sovereign immunity, this does not apply in cases of state-sponsored terrorism.

He was accused of stealing a sign from the hotel where he and fellow students had been staying in the capital, and sentenced to 15 years' hard labour. By the time he returned to the US after 17 months in detention, Mr Warmbier was comatose and suffered from brain damage. US doctors found no evidence of botulism and said that the student had suffered a "severe neurological injury", probably caused by a cardiopulmonary arrest. At the time, US President Donald Trump blamed North Korea's "brutal regime" for Mr Warmbier's death.

Can't be. Must be fake news. Trump considers Kim "very honorable".

It was sad that he died. He should have never been there. It's like the guy in the Florida Everglades show that puts his head in the mouth of a gator, and everyone is surprised if the gator clamps down on his head.

Don't put your head in the mouth of a gator, unless you're prepared to get bit.

One track mind.... Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump! For goodness sakes get a grip man!

Trump is a sleazeball that just keeps on giving

That "Sleazeball" is giving alright, like the best economy in modern US History. For the first time in 65 years North Korea on the verge of not being a problem.

Does the best economy go hand in hand will our massive and growing debt?

With the tax cuts paying for themselves the debt is growing no where near what the CBO predicted.

Surely you are kidding, the tax cuts have just gone into effect its way to early to say they are paying for themselves. I prefer the CBO estimate of 1-2 trillion added to the national debt unless you have data to change that

Guys like rocket man want to be buttered up and by doing so, Trump may actually get him to the negotiations.
Of course throwing out some gotcha snark about Trump is more important, so go ahead and enjoy the feel good moment.

Garbage, we will have a 1-2 trillion deficit because of these cuts.

I prefer to see the results nor projections from an agency that is always wrong.

JFK and Reagan did the same type of tax cuts results I have been talking about.

Obama did the opposite and increased the National Debt more than all the previous President combined.

Trump had over 500 business ventures and 6 failed. That is about as high a level of success and anyone can get.

I wouldn't even say failed.

They were re-organized, not liquidated.

As to the Op, how does an American citizen go about suing a foreign country?
