Louisville police officers fatally shoot man wielding screwdriver - ABC News

Two Louisville police officers shot and killed a homeless man after he lunged at them with a screwdriver, according to body camera footage released Monday.
“In this situation you will see from the video that two of the officers, or actually three of the officers Tased the individual, prior to the shooting,” Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Steve Conrad said during a press conference. “Unfortunately they were not effective, which resulted in the officers having to resort to the use of deadly force.”

Body camera footage from the scene shows Bowman pacing with the screwdriver in his right hand as the officers yell for him to “drop it.”

“Just drop it, we’re not trying to hurt you,” one officer yells, while other officers deployed their Tasers unsuccessfully.

The problem with Tasers is that either BOTH the electrodes must connect to flesh, or one to flesh and one to the ground, in order for the weapons to have any effect.

A moving target may cause one or both electrodes to "miss" the connection, rendering that shot useless.

Moreover, it is not always equally effective on every individual due to physiological differences.

Ideally, you want the target to stand in a puddle of water. So if you can scare the piss out of 'em first, the taser is far more effective.

What they need is something like a car airbag on a stick.

You lose some range, but gain in flexibility of use.

If they use Takata air bags, they won't even be technically non-lethal.

I have always advised PDs that tasers should be replaced with potato guns. Still non lethal.

What happened to billy clubs?

I'd rather have the club in a club vs. screwdriver fight.

Also, required levels of physical fitness and serious Krav Maga training for all beat cops.

What we need are these!:

How have we not improved upon nonlethal weapon technology by now?

I'd thought of those as well. Maybe it was a different movie, but didn't they also have a "sick stick" that would make someone puke immediately?

Naturally, these ideas are far easier to manage in a fictional setting.

Yep, would be great for Riot Police

I had an idea a few years ago, for a new police baton,
Batteries down the core with a large coil and metal ribs in a hard rubber skin just far enough apart to keep it from arcing.
The end of the baton would be a high power flash lamp, powered by the same coil/batteries.
If someone is acting up the flash would temporarily blind them, and the high voltage baton would ruin their day.

I think the tasers are only designed to penetrate the skin only a small amount.. So any heavy clothing, (hoodie, leather jacket, maybe really baggy jeans/pants) will stop the prob from making contact with the skin. So probably in December in Alaska you may want to depend more on the gun..

Once they are fired, the taser gun itself has the capability to shock when pushed against the skin. Again thick clothing may block the charge..

Add to that a spring loaded window punch in the handle end to break glass, I see to many swings at a car window with no effect. ( I have a patent on that BTW)
