MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Department of Justice have resumed the discussion on technical and legal opportunities to access encrypted data from mobile phones and other gadgets, local media reported Saturday, citing sources.

The employees of the two agencies met with cybersecurity experts to find out whether it is possible to install software that would allow US authorities to view encrypted data on users' devices, The New York Times reported.

Mobile phones already employ digital technology so that eavesdropping is not straightforward. Digital systems also make encryption easy to implement with a number of algiorthmic encryption systems that could be simply downloaded as apps.

I always smile when I see those reports.

I agree. Under the First A. everyone has a right to privacy.

I see the next objective is to design software apps for smart phones that would 'spoof' your phone's ID so that the CIA/FBI super-secret tracking technology could not locate you. Seems OK to do in principle. I think the technology is designed & built by Harris & was used to track down that Austin bomber.

Rule of thumb: if you want to be covert, leave your cell phone OFF. Otherwise this gadgetry can locate you by 'pinging' your phone's IP address. I was listening on my scanner one night & the local cops were using this method to tell exactly where a suspect was in a parking lot. Creepy.

Hell yeah, now we can see some bipartisan action. Republicans and Democrats can sell us down the river hand in hand.

LONG-SECRET STINGRAY MANUALS DETAIL HOW POLICE CAN SPY ON PHONES

HARRIS CORP.’S STINGRAY surveillance device has been one of the most closely guarded secrets in law enforcement for more than 15 years. The company and its police clients across the United States have fought to keep information about the mobile phone-monitoring boxes from the public against which they are used. The Intercept has obtained several Harris instruction manuals spanning roughly 200 pages and meticulously detailing how to create a cellular surveillance dragnet.

Harris has fought to keep its surveillance equipment, which carries price tags in the low six figures, hidden from both privacy activists and the general public, arguing that information about the gear could help criminals. Accordingly, an older Stingray manual released under the Freedom of Information Act to news website TheBlot.com last year was almost completely redacted. So too have law enforcement agencies at every level, across the country, evaded almost all attempts to learn how and why these extremely powerful tools are being used — though court battles have made it clear Stingrays are often deployed without any warrant. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department alone has snooped via Stingray, sans warrant, over 300 times.

Its kind of difficult for mindless democrat ****s to be too upset about invasions of privacy when this is the same kind of **** they have been celebrating for the last 18 months.

Okay, I'm not sure what that has to do with my statement. Invasion of privacy is a bipartisan issue when it comes to our politicians.

Who cares? Don't like it then don't use digital devices or commit crimes...

Except when people celebrate the illegal unmasking of political opponents using their private conversations and sham investigations based on fraudulent evidence.

They've been doing that for many long years.
