Woman sues Walmart for racial discrimination over beauty products in case

Responding to what is reported in the article I'd side with Walmart on this one. It is unfortunate that the black lady and her family were inconvenienced and needed to wait on a store employee to unlock the cosmetics section that contains products primarily favored by African-Americans. If white people somehow had immediate and unfettered access to the same product section the African-American lady's position regarding discrimination would certainly have merit.

When I have needed to purchase a can of spray paint at Lowe's or Home Depot I have had to hunt down a sales person to come unlock the spray paint section. I realize that the spray paint is locked behind a meshed shelf front solely because spray paint is frequently stolen when not secured.

It is a royal pain in the arse to hunt down a sales person just to purchase a can of spray paint. I doubt many people over the age of 30 are involved in spray paint theft. That said, I can understand and accept the position of Lowe's and Home Depot.

I don't often buy spray paint but when I do I go to a local Ace Hardware store where buying spray paint isn't a pain in the butt.

Try buying Sudafed. The horror. It has been a while since I purchased them. Had to walk up to the pharmacy counter and show my ID.
May be the lady misunderstood. I'm not sure how many products are being lock and key, but I know some are. It is the bad apples that make all of us have to jump through hoops at times.

The only people this is discrimination for is the thieves.Stores usually lock up high value and high risk items. Its why cigarettes behind the store counter in many stores. I know at the Quik-Trips when I was a kid the smokes were out in the open even the single packs. Now they are behind the counters.
\,

Things like cigarettes, spray paint, glue, etc., are, I believe, legally required due to age restrictions. Though I'm sure they also are prone to higher rates of theft, too.

Hell, I remember when cigarette machines were the norm... and often some place out of the way where a minor couldn't even be seen purchasing them.

At the end of the day it is a simple loss prevention calculation. You run a tally of which products get stolen the most. If that product is above a certain value and is stolen above a certain frequency, it becomes financially prudent to keep it locked up. If that is what happened then it isn’t racism, it is math.

I wonder if this a local issue, theft at that particular Walmart, because around here, these items are not behind any barrier.

Based just on the posts in this thread about the different Walmarts we have all been to, it certainly seems the procedures vary from place to place. Which makes sense since shoplifting rates aren’t uniform across the country.

Racist walmart policy. Legal issues are not 'easy peasy' which is why judges are there to help dumb ass citizens.

It is racist to reduce the thefts of your frequently stolen products?

They do it in my home town (which is mostly black people). They don’t do it where I live now...which is more diverse and tends to have less crime and FAR more law enforcement attention in the Walmart due to volumes of people.
