Over a dozen arrested for feeding homeless in El Cajon

EL CAJON (KUSI) — Over a dozen people were arrested Sunday evening in El Cajon for feeding the local homeless population. The arrests come in the wake of a newly enacted city ordinance banning people from feeding the homeless in public, but the group defied the new ordinance in an act of civil disobedience.
The group was given citations and not taken to jail.
This act of civil disobedience was in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one attendee said.
The group plans to do the same thing in two weeks.

I guess the homeless arent part of the public. Its illegal to give another man food in public if he doesnt own a home. (and women and chldren) Hand another man a boritto on the way out of the convenience store and you might go to jail. Cities keep passing these laws and doesnt it just seem like exactly the opposite of human?

What bloody sociopath came up with the law that criminalized feeding the homeless?

The way these liberal cities in California treats it's homeless and the people who try to help them is abhorrent.

Those (liberals elites?) in CA communities that would personally just rather not have to see them. The idea seems to be that we (meaning the government) must provide them (those inconvenient inferior folks) with food, clothing, shelter and medical care but in only in some (out of the way?) area that is not where they (the elite?) like to live, work, shop and play - that is, after all, part of what paying one's taxes in that exclusive zip-code should provide.

San Diego is NOT a "liberal city". Too much military.

Its pretty on the outside with a crunchy conservative core.

Before the last republican convention the homeless were rounded up and taken out of downtown.

You never see any homeless people on Coronado island. They promptly gaffle them up and take them back to the "mainland".

I was shocked at all the homeless while in CA just now. The increase from two years ago was staggering.

These are the same liberal cities and states that want to take tax exemptions away from churches. Knowing that churches give a lot back to the poor and homeless in their community and loosing tax exemption would take money thats spent of the poor away from the poor and give it to the government.

I'm surprised they didn't use public safety laws, of not being state certified to serve food to others.

Sounds like this city want the homeless to move to a sanctuary city like Los Angeles.

It is becomming more so but I would classify it as purple.

It a city in San Diego County. Not San Diego. It's 2010 population was 99,478.

The person I responded to specifically said "city"................not county.

They do this sort of thing every morning in Seattle. They call themselves "City Ambassadors." Everett, WA is basically a one way exit point for any homeless person with anywhere to go that isn't Seattle. They ship them east on hwy 2 and say sayonara.

El Cajon = NOT even remotely liberal.

I have done that many times.
Bought two meal deals instead of one and gave it to the homeless guy outside.
I make a habit of it when I am on the road.
El Cajon's law is a bit mean.
No animal or human should go hungry.

Technical question though: If only given a citation, doesn't that mean they were NOT ARRESTED?
Isn't a citation just a ticket?
Were as an arrest is where you are booked?

I assume they cuffed them and put them in the car before letting them go?

Re: Over a dozen arrested for feeding homeless in El Cajon

I worked for KFC when I was 14. We threw buckets of chicken away ever night at closing. The homeless shelter was a couple blocks away. I asked the manager if we could give the food to the homeless. He said absolutely not. I would be immediately fired if that chicken went anywhere but the dumpster. I asked if I could take it home and he said absolutely not. The liability is too high. I said I could buy that chicken 2 minutes before closing but after closing that chicken had to be thrown away. That is the rules. I used to put the bucket in a garbage bag and set it behind the dumpster and take it home when I left a few minutes after closing. I got caught and was fired.

Could you imagine how many homeless people could be fed perfectly good food thrown away every evening by restaurants and fast food places across this country. We are not even trying to help the homeless as a people. We are pathetic at best.

People who don't want them in their neighborhood or around their businesses. I would say most Americans.
