SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) --
The suspect in the fatal attack on a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy was described as a career criminal and gang member who has been in and out of the prison system for much of his adult life.
Suspect Alonzo Leron Smith, 30, is facing a charge of murder in the death of sheriff's Deputy Lawrence "Larry" Falce.
"This person needs to spend the rest of his life in prison," said San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos.
Ramos was angry at changes to the law and court decisions that, he said, allowed the suspect to be on the street when he should have been in prison.
He said Smith was convicted of a felony in 2012, described as being a gang member committing street terrorism with use of a gun, that should have kept him in prison for 12 years.
But an appellate court later overturned the case, saying the law applied only if he was in the presence of a second gang member, when he was actually alone at the time of the crime.
Falce was the oldest member of the 3,700-member department, which does not have a mandatory retirement age but requires deputies to pass training exercises several times a year to ensure they still can do the job, spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said.
“He spent all of those years basically patrolling the community he lived in,” she said.

Good people are being sacrificed out here in California for the Liberal Utopian Dream. I just want you all to know that. Sure, you may live far away and not care, but what starts in my state will reach yours too eventually. Some people who live in a land far, far away will accuse me of using fear tactics, well I didn't include pictures of victim and suspect this time, so at least they can't lob their usual accusations of race baiting.
I don't expect this thread to receive a fraction of the attention that the ones about bad cops do. No one cares when a cop dies anymore, accept his family and his brothers and sisters on the force.
Rest in Peace Larry. End of Watch 1.2.2018.
