SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The amount of violent crime in the U.S. has increased for the second straight year, according to new statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.

Among the 1,248,185 violent crimes reported in the U.S in 2016, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses increased 8.6 percent, aggravated assault and rape increased 5.1 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively, and robbery increased 1.2 percent.

The 2016 increase in the nation’s murder rate follows a double-digit percentage increase in 2015, the largest jump in more than 25 years. However, the nation’s overall murder rate in 2016 is well below its peak of 10.2 per 100,000 in 1980.

We're still 'well below' the murder rate of 1980, despite a million or so more gang members, and overflowing prisons. I'm a bit skeptical of that, but nonetheless, it's clear that Obama's tenure was a bloody one; from stirring racial tensions that lead to more dead cops, to targeting law enforcement personnel like Joe Arpaio, Obama sufficiently delivered all the left wing chaos I expected.

We are breaking down, crime will be going up.

I really do not see any reason to get that worried over those reported numbers. 9%? Nine people out of 100 or 90 people out of 1000?

Excuse me? You would do yourself a world of good to see if crime went up or down during Obama's tenure. What's more, you would do well to do a little research and find out for yourself what Arpaio actually did - among other things, he required that a pregnant woman be shackled to the table while she gave birth. Is that really the kind of law enforcement you want?

Did you see where it says homicides increased by double digits in 2015? That would mean that in 2016, homicides were up by 20% since 2014 (any 'double digit' number + 9%).

+20% in 2 years is very alarming, but if its a trend that continues for 2017, we can all just wait a few more months until crime figures for '17 are in, and then blame the whole thing on Trump.

Thread is about homicide, not 'crime', although the OP snippet also includes the fact that rape increased nationally by 5% in Obama's last year, for some indecipherable reason that the media won't bother trying to decipher anyway.

She's gamed the system quite nicely, wouldn't you say?

Arizona agreed to pay her $200,000. She's an illegal immigrant who put herself into the situation in the first place by coming to the USA to commit crime. Her specialty was forgery for financial gain. Well, at least she doesn't have to forge any checks for a while, she finally has a real check to cash, this one comes courtesy of the Arizona taxpayers.

And because the president has direct influence over the actions of murderers, I will be looking forward to your thread criticising Trump if those numbers aren't reduced in his first year.

Obama spent 8 years claiming his failures were the fault of George Bush. And the American media never challenged him on that. Will they be so easy on Trump? Absolutely not.

Either way, Trump loses on the crime issue:

A. Crime drops dramatically due to increased deportations of convicted illegal immigrants, tougher law enforcement - and the media accuses Trump of violating people's rights, negating his victory.

B. Crime rates stay the same, and the media attacks Trump for not doing enough to lower them.

Do you not realize that homicide rates - like almost all other statistics - often go up and down just like in the stock market? If you're expecting a constant year-to-year decrease every single year, then you've got a lot to learn about statistics, especially when it comes to human behavior.

What you should be looking at is NOT just one freaking year, but the entire eight years, and then look at the overall trend since the 1980's.

And when it comes to the woman Arpaio shackled, are you REALLY freaking saying it's no big deal since she sued and won her case????? You're not freaking outraged that Arpaio had her shackled to the table while she freaking gave birth??????? Do you really freaking think that while she was giving birth, she's thinking "Oh, boy, just think of all the money I can get for suing him"?????

Either you've never been the husband of a wife who's giving birth...or you simply didn't pay attention.

You should truly be ashamed of yourself.

Yeah I agree with you here. crime is mainly a state by state issue and blaming Obama for that is pretty sketchy

Depends what the numbers start at. If the crime rate is, say, 100 in 100,000 and it goes up 10%, that's 10 in 100,000, making the rate now 110 in 100,000.

Fair enough, but when the number of homicides increases by close to 20% in only two years, something very odd is at work. The OP said homicides increased by double digits in 2015, and then increased a further 9% in 2016 from the previous year.

Now tell me Glen; if homicides increase by 20% from now til to 2019, are you not going to blame Trump for that?

The woman, Miriam Mendiola-Martinez, was fulfilling every negative stereotype about illegals; she was pregnant waiting to deliver an anchor baby, while out committing crimes, and then she made the American people pay for her crimes by suing the state of Arizona.

If she hadn't of broken the law to begin with (multiple times) none of this would have happened.

Inmates are routinely ordered to wear restraints while receiving medical attention, if they are believed to be a physical threat to medical staff. This happens in every prison I can think of.

Sorry, but I don't see a reason to panic. What I will say is that if Obama was SO terrible for the murder rate, then it should have been obvious in the first six years as well, especially given the terrible economic crisis he inherited on day one (yes, economics do have some effect on the violent crime rate). So what happened in the last two years? The only big difference - sociologically speaking - was the rise of the influence of the "white nationalists", the alt-right. There has been a marked increase in hate groups and hate crimes. From Fox News (yes, FOX NEWS):

Obama’s presidency paired with the emergence the “Black Lives Matter” movement, the increasing diversification of the country and a decline in blue collar careers left some white Americans feeling marginalized and became prime fodder for the white nationalist movement, he said. The number of hate groups as designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center topped 1,000 for the first time ever in 2011 and while that number of groups dropped to 912 last year that likely understates the growing level of white nationalists in the country.

“It’s like in the 1920s with the Ku Klux Klan,” Hahn said. “What was striking was not that number of KKK members but the number of people who were allies of the group. Today the number of white nationalists don’t actually reveal the range of people who also sympathize with them.”

Experts and civil rights advocates contend that the campaign and subsequent election of Donald Trump only further vitalized these groups as the president’s call for stricter immigration controls and a ban on Muslim’s entering the country resonated with white nationalists.

Corey Saylor, the director of the department to monitor and combat Islamophobia at CAIR, said that while the U.S. Muslim community saw spikes in hate crimes following the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, his organization has noticed an unprecedented spike in incidents since the start of 2017. CAIR recently reported a 91 percent jump in hate crimes directed at Muslims for the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.

Is this in and of itself sufficient to blame the rising homicide rate on the alt-Right and the white nationalists? Of course not...but it may well be a factor. You do recall Trump's "fine people on both sides" remark after Charlottesville, and the fact that Congress voted almost unanimously to FORCE Trump to condemn the white supremacists. You have to ask yourself exactly why it is that Trump wouldn't do that BEFORE the Republican-led Congress forced him to do so.

What's more, there is a significant contingent of white supremacists in our police forces across the country...and IMO this is probably the biggest single reason for the jump in the homicide rates. Why? When the minorities believe (rightly or wrongly) that they are being targeted by the police, they will trust the police much less...and will be less likely to call the police when in need. This effect is magnified by the several instances of police shooting unarmed blacks - sometimes when it was the black man or woman who first called the police. Why should they call the police when they feel they have reason to believe that the police will be more likely to arrest or shoot them than to address whatever it is they would call the police about? And it doesn't help at all when firearms are sold so easily and cheaply that almost anyone can purchase them.

So...no. Given that the fact that the national homicide rate FELL from 5.0/100K to 4.5/100K during the first SIX years of Obama's presidency, and given the rise of the alt-Right and in hate crimes in the past two years, and given the deterioration of the trust that minorities have in law enforcement, it's very, very unlikely that the rise in the homicide rate over the past two years has anything to do with what Obama did or failed to do.

If a woman is on the side of the road having a baby, are you going to say, "well, I'm not going to help you unless I can shackle you, 'cause you might be a threat to me"???? Again, I think it's VERY unlikely that you've ever been in L&D watching over your wife as she's giving birth. Here's a clue, guy - she is NOT a threat to ANYONE when she's having a baby.

I think that even among your fellow far-rightists, you're going to find very few who agree with you that Arpaio was doing the right thing by forcing a woman giving birth to do so while shackled to a table. It occurs to me that you very well might be trolling me, for there are very, very few adults on the planet who would agree with you.

A woman on the side of the road isn't a convicted inmate, is she? Look, we can make unrelated comparisons all day, the truth is that some inmates are a threat to staff, or to themselves, and those inmates are put in restraints in order to avoid problems like lawsuits. If Martinez had not been restrained, and managed to stab somebody, then the state would be dealing with a lawsuit from the injured party. We just can't win either way when we have people who are so devoted to treating criminals with more compassion than the victims of crime, or law abiding citizens who don't do things like illegally live in a foreign country while committing crime.

KKK Kops...Non-existent hate crimes against Muslims....white nationalists...blaaaah.

You've managed to fit every fictitious fear-bait meme from the left into one post.

Out of the 15,000 homicides last year, how many were black on white? White on black? Muslim hate crimes?
