...and they certainly proved to be during this horrible mass shooting. There are story after story of these people, who were guests at the concert helping in so many ways. Directing people out of harm’s way as best they could... attending to injured, etc.

i heard an interesting commentary on the radio pointing out that as much as 2/3 of all of these professionals are off duty at a time. His suggestion was they be insured and authorized to use their police powers off duty or not.

TBH, I’m surprised they’re not.

Our instincts when the chips are down tell us fight/flight/freeze. Cops can interrupt our instincts to freeze, which is what far too many people do, by taking charge.

What do you think?

Yes they should be covered/insured.

Such professionals are trained/conditioned to assume command and mitigate human loss. It's reflexive and automatic.

The police, paramedics, doctors, and nurses in metro Las Vegas all responded skillfully and courageously within a theater of death.

Their professionalism and dogged determination has no doubt saved countless lives. They have my utmost respect, admiration, and gratitude.

In extreme scenarios like this I agree they should be covered. In a way, they're never truly off.

I'm hearing it took 70 minutes to kill this guy?

The police response was not great. There was nothing particularly heroic about the police response. Instead of just blindly bleating platitudes in worshipful tones about what the police did, maybe actually analyze the situation so hat improvements can be made?

Go ahead .... you seem to fancy yourself an expert.

Just a question but how would you know anything about the police response?
What do they need to improve? I guess the police, Fire and other first responder's putting their lives in danger
to save countless people just is not good enough for you.

The reason they are not...is because of insurance. The hiring department can be liable if the officer makes a mistake off duty. And the laws are much more difficult for off duty officers. There is also concern about abuse of power in personal matters.

Then we ought to have Good Samaritan laws on the books for these people just as we do for doctors. In order to be liable for treatment of a stranger, the complainant has,to prove not just negligence, but grossly so. It is hard to believe that they cannot be separately insured and employers held not liable for services performed off duty. That’s a law that should be changed.

Welcome to America...where insurance essentially controls every aspect of your life when it comes to the law (ok a little extreme). But seriously...it will never happen as long as there is a chance of liability. Insurance companies suck. So do governments

Well for one thing, the police responded to the fire alarm going off instead of the people in the hotel calling 9-11. Maybe start there?

Furthermore all the police did was SHOW UP. Once the SWAT team blew open the killer's door he offed himself. What was heroic there? Showing up? In that case the police are no more heroic than cheeleaders, plumbers, cashiers who show up everyday. And pizza delivery drivers have a more dangerous job. Where's their accolades and deific praise? And how dishonest for you to throw in fire and ambulance into the mix. I'm specifically referring to police presence, who did nothing more than show up.

So you really are not familiar with their procedures. OK. What you post is pure 100% nonsense.
