Why does a punch against a person on the street violate the law but not in a school or in the NBA?

Why isn't one player arrested for assault in the NBA when you or I would if it happened at Burger King?

Money.

Happens in the NFL all the time. In hockey, it's a featured event though against the rules.

I guess it's something about a competitive sports environment creating leeway in the use of physical force.

I have wondered the same thing on occasion.

At most games there are off duty police officers acting as security. When one fans punches another fan, they will place the person under arrest. But if one player punches another player, they just stand there, unless it turns into an uncontrollable brawl.

Legally, what is the difference?

Implied consent as a result of a sport being about physical confrontation? Sort of a "fighting words" thing being part of physical confrontation competitive sport?

Question marks because I'm not sure I buy that angle myself.

I wondered this a lot the day that Carlos Quentin broke Zack Greinke's collar bone.

If they arrested a NFL player every time a punch was thrown,, All that would be left would be the cheerleaders.. ( and maybe that would not be a bad thing!!)

NBA is not a contact sport. Neither is baseball.

Is "fighting words" implicit in contact (and semi contact) sports?

That is my point... why can they punch people in the face, legally, but I can't?

There would be no one left to play hockey.

Taking a charge creates quite a bit of contact. Fouling! Plenty of contact in the NBA.

Not technically within the rules. The leaving-bench rule is more strict than others.

Do you want to punch somebody in the face?

By the way, bar fights happen quite often.
Many times no charges are pressed.

That is the culture of the bar though... right?

Letting hockey fights go on makes some sense. The players are on skates, so injuring each other with punches is less likely since planting your feet for leverage is not really an option. The refs usually break up the fights once the players hit the ice and risk of actual injury becomes more likely. Also, with the players having weapons and stuff during regular play, the logic is let them fight so they don't whack each other with their sticks.

NBA is a whole different story. A punch there can ruin a career. Just ask Rudy Tomjanovich.

The sport which surprises me is Baseball. I would have expected more injuries during their brawls than we see because the foot planting thing is ideal when dudes are wearing spikes. But, rarely are solid punches landed when those boys go at it.

And the culture of sports....you don't press charges for something that happens during a game.

Nobody makes money off of bar fights... it is usually a couple of drunk people that WILL be arrested if a cop is there or is called... but in the NBA we have cops standing there WATCHING The fight and doing nothing about it... big difference.

I was referring to NBA and MLB specifically... because yes, a fight is serious.

NBA suspends players for throwing punches. A whole season if said punches are thrown at fans in the stands.

Which hurts the player monetarily probably far more than jail time (couple days) but still... double standard.

The only athlete I know of who was charged for in the play action was that hockey player who whacked the other guy in the head with his stick and knocked him out.

I see here that there were three players charged and convicted in history of NHL.

Why is this a problem for you???

If somebody punches you in the face, the only way they get charged with assault is if you press charges.
If you decide to not press charges, there's not a thing the legal system can do.

Keep in mind that fights in sports that don't ordinarily have fights (any sport other than ice hockey) tend to draw quite a lot of attention.
That's never a bad thing for ticket sales and tv viewership.

So I circle back to.... are you in need of punching somebody in the face?

I'd suggest you get into boxing or some martial arts competitions. All legal.

I took jui-jitsu and shotokan for years... I would also restate that I included fights in school in this discussion.
