A 22 year old cab driver was sentenced to 6 months in jail for trying to defraud and semi-kidnap 4 Chinese businessmen.
He picked up the 4 men at Schiphol airport and drove them to the inner city of Amsterdam. Close to the location he was supposed to drop them off, with the fare at 85 euro, another person jumped in the front seat and the cab doors were locked from the inside, the cab driver and his buddy started shouting at the Chinese saying they wanted 485 euro's or else. They drove past the hotel of the Chinese and in panic one of the Chinese men used the life hammer to smash the windows of the cab. The driver stopped, the 4 Chinese men got out, one threw 2 fifty euro bills to the front and got out too. The cab driver and his co-conspirator threw out the luggage and hauled ass down the street and out of the area.
Today the judge said that the driver was guilty of keeping people locked up against their wishes with extortion as the reason and he was sentenced to 6 months, another 3 months probation and his cab (a nice Mercedes Vito) was also taken from him and will be scrapped or sold at auction.
The only reason the judge was reasonably lenient for them man was because it was his first offense.
And quite rightly too, this kind of highway robbery has to be stopped with jail time, if cab drivers want to scam people they have to now fear real jail time for their crimes.
