While working on this story about the efforts to catch the Golden State Killer – even in the “48 Hours” offices, full of true-crime journalists – the first reaction was often “How did I not know about this?” Though the case has been under the public radar for over 40 years, the identity of this prolific criminal has been a mystery, confounding generations of investigators across California. A big reason for this lack of awareness of his 10-year spree – 50 rapes and 12 murders from 1976 to 1986 – is how careful the Golden State Killer was to cover his tracks and not be caught. But, it also took a long time for authorities to definitively tie all of the crimes to the same perpetrator. Until recently, most people simply did not know that one criminal committed all of these offenses.

Connecting the dots in the search for a California serial killer - CBS News

Occasionally I like to read about old, unsolved crime stories, especially when the story took place in California. Recently I read about the case of the Golden State Killer, who wreaked havoc on California for a full 10 years. So why isn't this case better known? We've probably all heard of the Zodiac serial killer, there's been movies about it, books.

But the case of the GSK remains off most people's radar. Are you familiar with the case? Why do you think he wasn't caught?

The most obvious reasons are that he died or went to jail for a different crime

Yowza. People are always cursing me for starting threads that contain non-white criminal suspects, so I start one about a white criminal and there's zero interest. What gives DP?

Since he is white he has no excuse so there is nothing to debate... right?
