Meet 83 year old Floridian Eugene Matthews, arrested this year on 2nd degree murder

Re: Meet 83 year old Floridian Eugene Matthews, arrested this year on 2nd degree murd

Yesterday, the Bradenton Herald in Manatee County, Florida provided an update on Eugene Matthews. He appeared in Court to further argue his Stand Your Ground Defense Motion.

Bradenton judge deciding whether to dismiss murder charges based on 'stand your ground' law | Bradenton Herald

If that insane bastard is released without charge on "stand your ground", then it'll be a ginormous travesty of justice.

No it wont.

It will be an affirmative stance for protecting one's property and self.

Re: Meet 83 year old Floridian Eugene Matthews, arrested this year on 2nd degree murd

Yes, it does seem you have taken the media version of events for granted. I live in the area. The county has a notorious "Good Ole' Boy" network. The popular Sheriff that Matthews battled for decades, Charlie Wells, has a brother named Rick that took over the department. Charlie had a Special Unit called Delta Force, many of whom went to prison for various causes.
The Circuit Court Judge, Janette Dunnigan, who denied bond to Matthews, also violated judicial ethics in 2012 by attempting to hold a fundraiser for Ed Brodsky, the current elected State Attorney. The Chief Judge at the time, Andy Owens, reassigned Dunnigan from the Criminal Bench to Family Bench. Apparently enough time has passed, the powers-to-be felt they could move her back to the Criminal Bench.

Corruption still runs rampant in major parts of Florida.

Well, since that's the link you gave in your OP, I'm guessing we were meant to go by what it said. You also say they 'hatched a plan' Can you share what that plan was? It wasn't in the report.

That's complete crap and you know it.

Re: Meet 83 year old Floridian Eugene Matthews, arrested this year on 2nd degree murd

I don't know FL law in any detail, but I'm betting that Stand Your Ground doesn't mean you get to leave your house shooting at fleeing people.

I'm trying to figure out how he shot her through the windshield and hit her in the face, while they were fleeing? Don't sound possible.

I expect Judge Brian Iten to rule against Matthews. Iten spent most of his law career as a prosecutor. Florida Gov. Scott appointed Iten to the 12th Circuit Court Bench in 2015. The Chief Judge for the Circuit rotated Iten onto the Criminal Bench quicker than customary. This has become an issue and led to Iten recusing himself repeatedly.

I also expect Matthews to cite Iten's history of recusals and 21 years as a State Attorney as grounds for an Appeal.

Really?

I have an a-hole constantly violating the sanctity of my property. If Oregon were a castle law state, he would be dead long ago.

From the linked article in post #23 -

Matthews’ best friend, Rawson’s ex-husband Edward, died on Jan. 4 and Matthews says he was left with his dog, Bart. Rawson’s ex-wife, daughter and brother had met with Matthews to talk about the dog a few days later, and Matthews says he said he would consider returning the dog.

On the evening of Jan. 10, the Rawsons returned to Matthews’ home in the 12000 block of Pritchart Road in Parrish and Rawson’s ex-brother-in-law knocked on the front door, according to detectives. Matthews’ live-in-girlfriend, Juanita Sills, answered the door, he called out for Bart, picked him up, turned to head back to the car and then Matthews came to the door shooting his gun.

One of the bullets struck Rawson, and she later died at Manatee Memorial Hospital.

Matthews’ defense has repeatedly argued that the Rawsons had broken through Matthews’ locked gate and that the victim’s ex-brother-in-law had kicked on the door.

That was their plan? To knock on the door and call the dog? Wow....I'm sure that took a while to 'hatch' that plan. Can't fix stupid I guess.

Sorry... childhood years at 24??

Maybe you do did not understand the gist of my post?

That daughter at around age 15 came to me and expressed a desire to get into fights. I didn't think I could thwart her fighting impulses, so I asked her to do her fighting on our turf or neutral turf. I reasoned if Law Enforcement became involved, this would put us at less of a prohibitive disadvantage. My strategy worked during her teen years. Not so much after she went to college. Her care free, pedal-to-the-medal lifestyle nearly cost her life late November 2015. She wrecked as a passenger on a motorcycle. 27 year old pro circuit rider, Mike Corbino, died instantly. My daughter survived severe head injury (one month in a coma), broken pelvis, steel bar placed in her broken left arm, and severe lacerations.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Department and Eugene Matthews have feuded for decades. Not a single one of seven prior arrests have resulted in a conviction.

In short, Matthews housed a friend's dog. The friend had died the week before. The family that came to pick up the dog anticipated trouble retrieving the dog. In spite of this, they hatched a plan anyway. The plan went haywire. Mr. Matthews shot and killed his friend's wife. Now Matthews resides without bond in the county jail with his trial set for this July.

The Sheriff's Department, the local Judiciary, local State Attorney's office and local newspaper all have it out for Eugene Matthews. His future freedom rests on the quality of his representation and a jury.

How do you think this plays out?

From just the article it sounds like the dude is a certifiable nut case and should have been locked up / getting help already. Dont know if the info is accurate be he seems like a kook.

I have never met him. I have known about him for decades... and know to stay clear of him. I had a very close friendship with one of his nephews, Allen, who died last June.

The word cantankerous comes to mind!

Lots of facts to get ironed out. Who's story is closer to the truth? But if the story in the paper is true about the shooting.
It would seem that Mr. Matthews's could be in serious legal jeopardy.

"Three shots were fired, as the Rawson family quickly tried to flee. One shot struck the windshield and hit Rebecca Rawson in the face."

So apparently the women that was killed was sitting in a car?

The post you responded to was from May so I'm not exactly up on the details at the moment.

I got the rest of it just that part stood out so I sought clarification.

Sorry to hear that but I assume she is well now?

It saddens me to think about it. She walks, she talks, she drives a new Honda Accord with every available Safety Feature. She leases an upscale, over $2000/month, apartment. I have not seen her since my mother's funeral last summer. She looked pretty. I asked her to please outlive me. She promised she would! Her mother and I, married 22 years, finalized a tumultuous divorce in 2011. Due to restraining orders and other legal obstacles, I do not initiate contact with 3 out of 4 of my daughters. I take ownership of my situation. I have worked diligently in the last few years to break my "Cycle of Stupidity".

I am in a similar situation and wish nothing but the best for you. It sucks.

I try to stow any bitterness. I have had my share of luck and over-the-top times. Most of my adult life I called myself "a Free Spirit". This meant I made up rules as I went. Late in 2009, age 53, my crazy lifestyle became untenable. I faced constant chaos, drama and insanity. Slowly, it took years, I regained stability. Today, day-to-day, I have become far more proactive. One day at a time. Progress, not perfection. No one fails who tries their best. Take what you have left and keep going. You get my drift. All grins! May our Best Times Lie Ahead!

I think he's F'd and the remaining years of his elderly life will be in custody.

About a year ago here in my area, Mason County, Washington we had a guy who owned two adjacent houses, he owned one as a residence and based a business out of the other. He had them all signed up "trespassers will be shot" etc whatever. So some guy who's a special ed teacher from Woodinville (an upscale Seattle suburb about 30 miles from here) is at a party at a neighboring house, gets drunk, and wanders off his friends house and into the second house and starts taking a shower, the owner goes in, hears the shower, goes back to his residence house, gets a pistol, doesn't call the cops goes back and shoots drunk special ed teacher through the shower curtain. Take a wild stab how that ended for him.

Well it hasn't ended but he's on the docket for a murder trial

Absolutely Yes. Did you look at photos of Mr. Matthews homestead? If you choose to go out of your way to a bear's habitat, then tweak a bear's nose, expect consequences.

I would agree insofar as doing something you know is dangerous means you could suffer consequences.

I'm not going to go to a Hells Angels roadhouse and slash tires on a Harley because I could get my ass beat doing it, but legally it's still illegal for Hells Angels to beat the **** out of someone for a tire slashing.

You were posting about corruption in the local government, that's all well and good, but in a case where someone was shot to death it really doesn't matter. The last problem this homeowner had was in 1999 from what I can tell, and unless the deceased was paying racket money to the SO or something there really is no corruption issue I can see involving this case.

Re: Meet 83 year old Floridian Eugene Matthews, arrested this year on 2nd degree murd

If that insane bastard is released without charge on "stand your ground", then it'll be a ginormous travesty of justice.

So was George Zimmerman. Told to stand down. Instead got out of his car and chased young Mr. Martin down in Mr. Martin's father's neighborhood. But Zimmerman has the right to claim, "Stand your ground". How could that be when Zimmerman chased Mr.Martin after he was told to stand down? A lot of money flowed into the Zimmerman camp from sources external to the case. Media outlets who's support is derived from second amendment groups hammered the case for the defense every day. Geraldo Riverra talked about why would Mr. Martin wear a hoody. Like wearing a hoody on a rainy night is so suspicious. A tell tail of a gang member. Sean Hannity was all over this false narrative. But the truth was Mr. Martin was on video buy Skiddles and Ice tea at the local convenience store then returning to his father home to watch the foot ball game with his brother. So in Florida you can be stocked down in your own neighborhood and because you might fight for your life, that and your color makes you wrong. The irony is those who watch Fox know in their hearts that the case for Zimmerman and against Mr. Martin was a hatchet job done on behalf of the NRA and their weapons manufacturer money. Honest people know that it's always about money. What's right or wrong has nothing to do with it. Yet they will yell about the BIAS MEDIA.
