New details given by friends revealed that an 86-year-old woman was killed trying to protect her friend during an attack by a man on the Highlands High School track.

Fusako Petrus lived in North Highlands and was out for a morning walk Wednesday with her 61-year-old friend when a man approached the pair, according to Petrus' family friends.

Butler said Petrus immigrated from Kyoto, Japan and had lived in North Highlands since the 1960s. Her late husband was a veteran, and the couple were avid bowlers.

The attacker was described as a black man in his 30s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed between 150 and 160 pounds.

Such a shame that Mrs Petrus wasn't allowed to live out the rest of her life in peace. The kind of violence she encountered here in America is very rare in her native Japan.

A suspect in the case has been arrested, and he's an 18 year old that apparently could pass for a 30 year old.

Sure there Chomsky. To me, this is a more important story than a bad doctor who was kicked off a flight and now stands to collect millions of dollars in extortion money. Yet I'm sure you won't see it that way.

Well, what I'm saying is it seems to be just one relatively common piece of local news with no impact upon the national consciousness.

It's not Trayvon Martin, it's not Reginald Denny, for instance. So I'm not sure of the import of this story, versus the dozens of other murders occurring across the country that day.

You do have a point there... it is technically more of a story...someone died... but a lot of people today(especially in California) are moral relativists, so this story means nothing because only things with video tape, police, or white dudes matter.

I'm so snarky lately... haha, but i'm not sorry.

Huh. "Extortion"? That word doesn't mean what you think it means.

Right, the fact that you don't bat an eye when a suspect from a certain background bludgeons an 86 year old woman in broad daylight, tells me that you're very used to hearing these kinds of stories, and aren't moved by it. And most people probably share your opinion; a man being kicked off a plane is more rare and exciting than the hundreds of people who are murdered like Mrs Petrus per week. Yet since there are far more victims like Mrs Petrus out there than Trayvon or Dr Dao, I'm more concerned with them, and also with the apathy most Americans have towards them.

Sick bastard.

You've wronged me in some way, albeit not gravely or permanently. Therefore I'm entitled to millions of dollars, or else I'll speak to the media about how I was wronged, and ruin your reputation.

How was doctor Dao a bad doctor and just why should he have endured what he did?

Newp. That's not it. I'd suggestion learning what that words mean. It could really be helpful.

I think the notable part of this story is that the OP finally showed empathy for an immigrant.
Of course that might have something to do with the alleged assailant being black. He probably had a difficult time figuring out which prejudice to favor.

What can any of us do about a robbery killing?

Nothing...

What can we do about United...

Something.

Racist attacks like this do not belong here...

He lost his medical license for giving drugs to men as payment for sex. His license was reinstated at some point. Murrica.
