Over and over again, the American justice system teaches us that it has very little value for black lives. We yell "black lives matter" by the millions because everything about the arc of this nation tells us they don't. Of all the ugliness and brutality against black bodies that I've waded through and dissected over the past few years, it'd be hard to say any of them were a bigger kick in the gut than what I'm about to tell you. Now, a family that has already had their loved one snatched from them is suffering yet another unthinkable indignity.

On Monday, March 28th, 2016, 16-year-old Quason Turner (his friends and family called him Qua), was walking home from his after-school job at Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey. He was a wonderful kid known for his never-ending happiness and easy going nature. A popular sophomore at Pennsauken High School about 10 miles outside of Philadelphia, he had decided to go check on some friends before heading home for the night.

Susan Hyland, now 41, had a suspended driver's license at the time of the crash — one of 39 times her license was suspended, motor vehicle records show. Who knew a license could even be suspended so many times? She barreled over Quason as he crossed a highway, jumping over a median to see his friends.

She was given probation and ordered to have drug treatment — with the threat of prison if she violates her probation

This one is a quick read - but you really have to go to the DN and read the entire article to see how she 'got away' with it. I do not doubt - that if it were me . . . with a flawless driving record, not a crack head, a productive citizen -

I would have gone to prison for the rest of my life. She got break after break after break - and now this worthless use of a life gets a chance to do it again.

These things are always hard to judge without knowing the whole story, the lawyer and the judge. But I suspect that black lives do matter, even though it is not at all politically correct to say so. ;)

"vicious" would indicate intent. I doubt there was.

Prayers for all involved

Wow... She was a bad apple... And should most definitely be put in prison forever...You really have to feel for the family.. No justice at all...

I read the article fairly quick..so a few details I missed or were not in print

The boy jumped a median and crossed a highway??? My definition of a highway is multiple lanes ( possibly) with cars going 55 MPH and up. Was there a crosswalk?? a stoplight???

He was going home from a after school job.. Was it dark??

Whenever I cross a street ( at a crosswalk) my head is on a swivel,,,I am looking all around for cars.. Even if a driver is at total fault,, You never are a winner in a pedestrian/Car battle..

I look at this as more of the failure of the judge,, not the system.. The system probably had jail time options and the judge failed to use them.. Almost a crime unto itself..

I will want to do some research on this "judge". Just for my own curiosity.

You would not go to prison for the rest of your life, I don't think vehicular manslaughter is a capital offense anywhere in this country.

In addition the victim was apparently crossing a highway outside of an authorized crosswalk, at night , from the other half of a divided road. Which means she was in a strong legal position to fight the vehicular homicide. She could argue it was the negligence of the boy and not her that led to his death. Hence the DA didn't push that.

Probation or short sentences are a norm in states with no mandatory minimum for this kind of crime. They had DWLS and fleeing the scene. They could not prove her intoxication, if she was, at the scene or within a reasonable time frame and apparently did not have suspicion to test her after arrest

While it sounds cruel, the law was on her side in several ways here, at least when it came to DWI and manslaughter charges. Leaving only the more minor charges as valid to pursue

Note that not having a drivers license doesn't mean people won't drive anymore than being a convicted felon doesn't mean a he or she won't have a gun. On the surface it appears she belongs in jail. I'm sorry for the family of that boy. Had she followed the law, he'd still be with us.

This is why it's illegal wo walk on or beside highways.

Maybe. He was walking on a highway.

It could have been a white kid as well. But you wouldn't take 30 seconds to look at this point of view as your history of posts have proven. It has nothing to do with race other than you trying to make it so.

Where was the Obama justice department when all this was going on. I would hope that if this happened under the Trump administration, his justice department would be more proactive. Not wait until there is a high profile case of a police shooting, but see that all Americans get the protections they deserve.

Valid points.. A quick look at that intersection on Google earth show a 3 foot tall concrete barrier separating the lanes.. And a stop light just 1 block up.. definitely could have been avoided by just following the rules..

Whew. What a relief. It was getting kind of boring. I mean...how long has it been since the last 'Black Life' was lost that actually mattered? Awesome...we have one. Poor black victim of a white woman in a car.

Seriously...when was the last life that was lost that mattered to you? I mean...you havent said **** about it in...ever. What...have there been no unjust poor black victims of cop shootings since you started posting regularly on the site? Was it Mike Brown? that was awhile ago. Tamir Rice? Thats been...what...4 years?

And you know whats REALLY sad? You had to quote a pretend black guy to find a black life that actually mattered to you. Thats truly sad, and yet...at the same time...funny as hell.

I guess without Obama shadow money fuelling their movement they need to be selective about which Black Lives Matter.

Well...the one thing we DO klnow is that black lives lost to abortion dont matter to him. Black lives lost due to poverty...meh. Black unemployment rates...who cares. Black high school dropouts...what are they going to go to school for...its not like there are jobs for them. Black victims of black criminals? Hell...if we go since Tamir Rice, theres been approx 30,240 dead black people of all ages that he hasnt much given a **** about. But...at least there was a black victim of a white woman driver...who was obviously killed because he was black and she was obviously let go only because the black life she took didnt matter to the courts.

I have to admit, I had to say this over and over again to myself and it still doesn't make sense, because ... well I know dam well I could never achieve this preivilige.

Think about it ... a individual who's only been alive for 41 years, and a Adult for a only 23 of those years, had 39 Suspended Drivers Licence.

Just try saying that enough times to yourself until it makes common sense. Now try saying to yourself exactly what do you have to do to get your Drivers Licence Suspended 39 times at the age of 41 .... really ... 39 Times! That's multilile times a year during your adult life.

I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation, you'll just have to drink a lot to understand it.

I would need to see where this happened to judge. Jumping a median on a highway? It is possible such an accident could be no fault of the driver. But I don't know.

And yet... if the driver had been an illegal immigrant, you and the Breitbart nerds wouldn't likely be able to find the humor in all of this.

You have to admit, there are certin stories that are just prime for weeding out the truth in some people. This is obviously one of them.

... and I agree ... if I was driving tonight an I hit someone on the road, there's clearly mitigating circumstances. But if I had 39 convictions and licence suspensions ... and being Black .... you can bet I would have to cancel my Summer plans.

Just saying ...

Mission Accomplished. ;)

I could care less what color she is and what color the victim is, what I do care about very much is that she had her license suspended 39 times. I would think that would have lead to a permanent suspension in a just traffic system IMHO.

She should have been sitting in jail for all the times she was driving on a suspended license.

Ooh, and the punishment is ridiculously lenient for such a habitual traffic criminal.

Heres the thing, sparky. You and CIgar ONLY care about this because a black guy got killed. The right kind of black guy and the right kind of circumstances...killed by someone...well...non black.

I care about DUI offenses. If it was up to me her ass wouldnt have gotten past 2x. I DONT care about her race. Not even a little bit. This isnt a one off situation that only happened because the victim was black. This isnt a situation where the driver got off because the victim is black. If you and Cigar retired the victim mentality your lives would PROBABLY be t least a little better. Not great I imagine...but they might suck just a little bit less.

It's also next to irrelevant in the decision to charge or not to charge for vehicle man.

The circumstances are such of this accident that someone who stayed at the scene would not be charged at all most likely. Crossing a divided highway illegally as a pedestrian is generally the pedestrians fault. And if she had been charged in that way there is a good chance her lawyer could get it dismissed. That's why the charge wasn't sought. You're focusing on the wrong thing, she is in trouble for her DWLS and for fleeing the scene, but the circumstances likely do not warrant homicide charges.
