Mississippi lawmakers are advancing a proposal to add firing squad, electrocution and gas chamber as execution methods in case a court blocks the use of lethal injection drugs.

Republican Rep. Andy Gipson says House Bill 638 is a response to lawsuits by "liberal, left-wing radicals."

The bill passed the House amid opposition Wednesday, and moves to the Senate.

I consider this is a move in the right direction...

Mississippi is a blast from the past. I'm surprised they didn't add lynching to their proposal.

I think Mississippi is more republican now, lynching were a democrat tool!

Dixiecrats may have changed their party but they didn't change what they really are. They're still the same racist bigots they always were.

Awesome. And they could do a pay per view event when the sentence is handed down. Do a big wheel of fortune thing and have the convicted murderer spin the wheel to discern his own fate.

They televised the last firing squad execution in the 70's I think, as I recall it was anti climatic!

Oh...I dont think we need to televise the actual execution...just the selection process at sentencing.

You DO understand why they are considering it...right?

Yes because the death penalty isn't supposed to be a torture sentence. The lawsuits are valid and just.

Utah allows for execution by firing squad. The last one was in 2010, but I don't remember it being televised. And yes, it was anti-climatic.

I think a shot in the back of the neck might be quicker and more certain.
Why one would want to kill these guys is more than I can fathom, however.

The one I am thinking of was in 76 or 77, and it was on national TV. The guy had a choice and choose a firing squad.

I don't believe in the death penalty, period.

how many have there been that have been sentenced, that were then later found to be not guilty of the crime for which they were convicted?
One executed person wrongly convicted that was innocent is too many.

The Innocence Project along with DNA technology has proven the flaws of the criminal injustice racquet ........

OK, I was kidding; I believe in the death penalty.
Let's just kill everyone & then after we find out they're innocent we will just go dig them up & do some CPR

If we're going to execute someone, it should be done publicly. People need to see the results of these kind of actions and the results of the DP. I don't like the idea of a firing squad, though. Just give them something to put them out and then cut off their O2 or use the old French classic - the Guillotine.

The whole Dixiecrat myth flies in the face of logic and is something only a leftist would push. The idea that democrats upset over republicans passing legislation they opposed would somehow join that party that passed that legislation they didn't like. It doesn't make any sense. It would be like if republicans who are upset over Obama-care passing deciding to switch to the democrat party especially in a state that is very anti-Obama care.

uhm Utah allows firing squads presently. Oklahoma does as well...

Delaware, New Hampshire and Washington having hanging which I an assuming is what you meant by "lynching".

actually if you notice, the less racist the south becomes, the more republican it becomes.

Really? A firing squad? :doh

It's every bit as effective as a lethal injection and certainly no more cruel or unusual. Give the convict a shot of knock out juice, strap them to a chair and blow a hole in their heart. It's a proven technique.

I person can linger for a long time with head trauma. I missing heart is quick.

Last I noticed they still revere that stupid confederate flag and everything it represents. Damn that Lost Cause.

Forgive me for being technical, but I would guess that four .30-06 in the heart would leave more than a hole. Regardless, yes, it is proven to be quick and effective. I don't see why anyone would object.

Utah uses five rifles with four real bullets and one blank. I didn't see what Mississippi was going with.

IT's really a culture thing, not a racist thing. it's dumb, I agree.
