It seems to me that many folks don't get proper advice on dangerous areas of the world.

Oh please, I'll take Panama over many places in the US.

Don't be a xenophobe.

That's sad but that kind of stuff happens here, too.

My uncle lives in Panama and has told us many times how dangerous it is there.

What place would you not take over the U.S.?

Yemen.

I've been everywhere, most of the world is safe. I'm driving down to the beach in Mexico on Friday, not a bit worried.

safe travels, dude.

A Central American country is dangerous, is a surprise to whom?

Once you cross the Rio Grande moving south, all bets are off. No "rule of law" and bribery is the normal daily form of justice. The Canal Zone in Panama used to be pretty safe, but not so since the Panamanians took it over after Jimmy Carter gave it back to them, and then they decided to try and sell it to China.

Sad story nonetheless. However, I don't see what makes this tragic story any more news worthy than any of the hundreds of other violent deaths that took place on that day around the world? What we choose to focus is baffling at times.

Ever been to Costa Rica? One of the safest countries in the world.

Just guessing here, but the op probably assumed this crime was perpetrated by a mooslim.

I assumed it was " strangled with her own bathing suit", which turns out to be wrong, she was beaten and strangled but it is suspected that it was her pareo (bikini suit cover-up) which was used.

Seems like Karina didn't either.

Living here I have found it to be quite pleasant and peaceful generally.

Knock on wood, don't wanna jinx it. Bocas del Toro up near the border to Costa Rica is a party/foreign draw to drug and drinking crowd that also attracts crime.

Its like everywhere else that has crime, tragedies happen.

Don't be a xenophobe.

I'm being a wise man, xenophobia has nothing to do with it.

That's sad but that kind of stuff happens here, too.

Sure it does, but here one can carry a gun for self defense.

My uncle lives in Panama and has told us many times how dangerous it is there.

Exactly correct. All of Central America and Mexico, is very dangerous.

Yemen.

I've been everywhere, most of the world is safe. I'm driving down to the beach in Mexico on Friday, not a bit worried.

Of course you aren't.

Been doing it for 30+ years.

Some people are just lucky and some people are never seen again.

Ever been to Costa Rica? One of the safest countries in the world.

Not any longer.

Have you ever been to Costa Rica?

Or Central America?

Extrapolating one article into fear...not a very good practice.

One of the reasons I like traveling through Mexico and other places is that I don't have to worry about terrified xenophobes ruining a good time.

Ever been to Costa Rica? One of the safest countries in the world.

Yes. I have. In fact there's a lifelong friend of mine that owns a farm near the coast, and he has to have private security. If Costa Rica is what you believe to be one of the safest countries in the world, I'd hate to see what you define as a dangerous country.

I've been to dangerous countries, CR is not dangerous.

I was traveling through a horrible ghetto once and took a wrong turn... almost ended badly for me.

Why didn't the State Department issue a Travel Ban for East L.A.?

Depends on where you go in that country. New Zealand is pretty safe except if you go into certain areas too...
