So I heard about this from a friend who works at the University of Florida. Apparently there is some dude walking around just off campus wearing a Swastika. Well the local police have been alerted, but my friend sent me the local police Facebook page. And it is CRAZY.

There is the link. Feel free to review some of the ridiculousness going on there. No Facebook is required to look at it. But anyway. You have people legitimately calling for this person's arrest for wearing the swastika. Then they are calling GPD evil for not supporting their view. Bear in mind, this is the department that is run by a black man, and also featured the basketball cop incident (where the guy came out to a call about kids playing basketball in the road and brought Shaquille O'Neal back with him the next day to play). And they exist in a very liberal college town. If they were racist as a department...it would be national news.

So. Tell me. Do you think this is sad? Pathetic? Or do you think this person should be arrested for wearing a swastika? Do you think "hate speech" is just as protected as regular speech?

Exactly. If you start making exceptions, eventually you may find your own opinion of something considered hate speech.

If the guy wants to wear a Swastika, that's up to him or that's his problem. Yes, that is free speech. I have seen seen folks who get the Swastika tatoo'd on them. Some heavy metal band members comes to mind if some of you can remember that far back. I'm not sure though that walking around with a Swastika arm band is hate speech. What has the guy said?

But it does look like the GPD is just looking for a reason to arrest the guy. The GPD put out that it has been rumored the guy is attacking people and is calling for witnesses and victims to come forth. So far none.

Well a lot of those comments are pretty dumb. While the guy is definitely a scumbag for wearing a swastika armband on campus, that is most defintley free speech.

So what he is doing is protected under the law, whether they like it or not. Freedom of speech doesn't just protect speech that you agree with, people.

Arrested, nope, 1st A rights and all. That said the University can kick the person out for conduct that violates their school policies, which I have no doubt is covered. We are free to exercise our rights, but no Rights are protected against the consequences for exercising them.

Of course he should not be arrested for wearing a swastika. If he were, his first call should be to the local ACLU office as I am sure they would defend him.

I think it is their duty to investigate if the guy actually has harmed someone...given the rumors. I don't trust the rumors because of what I think he is doing...trolling. I think people are just trying to get him arrested. But that is just a suspicion. If he actually did it...I think that people would be all over him.

I think it's sad and pathetic that this individual feels the need to wear a swastika, but there are idiots all over the place. I don't think he should be able to be arrested merely for that. But the dude is an idiot.

He isn't on campus. He is off campus. He would likely be removed from campus if he was. I don't think he has a right to be there unless he is a student. If you have ever been to the town, the line is clear as it is basically cut off by roads. If you cross the street you are on campus. It was always fun to watch the scalpers on game day because of the line (I am a gator fan).

He isn't on campus. At least not to my knowledge.

I don't think you should be arrested for wearing something even if it offends most . It is no different from BLM carrying signs with "pigs in a blanket , fry them like bacon " or signs that say " no justice , no peace "

My bad then, nothing the law can do other than wait patiently with a sponge and bag to pick up what is left of him when some angry citizens get their hands on him.

if only more people realized this.

now everything that someone doesn't like is classified as hate speech.

I think they should be encouraged. Easy to spot the assholes that way.

That's why you all ****ed up on the gay cake thing. I'd rather know who not to give my business to.

Absolutely. Protected from government interference.

However, if people choose not to associate with this guy, well, that's his tough luck.

I am a gator fan

Please tell me you're not one of those Gator fans who will root for LSU or Alabama in a major bowl game because of "SEC pride" and all that nonsense.

To a point yes, but if it becomes where he can live or work anywhere then that has the same chilling effect on free speech that a law would.

I'd recommend a squeegee if he happens to walk by the local Jewish Community Center when the brothers have rented out the court for the day.

If he walks into my place of business wearing a swastika, I sure as hell ain't giving him a job.

If he walks into my rental property looking to rent an apartment, I sure as hell ain't making him a tenant.

Good point :)

There actually is a facility off campus. And a lot of Jewish folk go that university. But I don't know where he was spotted at.

And those angry citizens would be in the wrong, if he has not actually done something to violate the law. Timing is everything.

They can legally do the same thing back to him, however, so that perhaps he gets irritated enough that he does something that does violate a law, any law. Single dradle songs at him, wear rainbow arm bands, all sorts of passive symbols that would be sure to aggravate him. There is the danger of him over reacting, however, and that must be taken into consideration also.

Dumb. Even beyond the free speech angle, the swastika symbol has a deep history prior to Naziism. It is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism and other religions.
