An armed passing motorist was credited with saving the life of an Arizona state trooper by shooting and killing a gunman who ambushed the trooper in the middle of a lonely interstate highway before dawn Thursday.

"I would just say at this point, thank you, because I don't know that my trooper would be alive today without his assistance," Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, said after he met with the seriously injured trooper at the hospital.

Armed citizens, coming to the aid of law enforcement, is not unique. It has happened more often than people realize, often times w/o any media involvement.

UPDATED: Civilian shoots, kills man attacking deputy in Florida

UPDATE: The suspect who was fatally shot by a civilian while beating a Florida deputy has been identified as 53-year-old Edward Strother.
The bystander who fatally shot Strother, likely saving the deputy’s life, has not been identified.

It's one data point on success rate and on desire. Besides, as to the latter, who'd be nuts enough not to thank the guy.

A policy question must analyze all the data, though.

the fact is, the people who spend the most time dealing with criminals are not big fans of gun bans

Correct.

And.....................the perp was a one time Federali gone bad, became a drug addict .......and an illegal alien in Az. The hero citizen not only saved the cops life, he did a great service to America. Now that's the kind of guy who should be getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom....NOT Joe Biden!

The video of the shooting has been released by the States Attorney.

Just do a search on YouTube for "Good Samaritan saves deputy's life".
 
This is the second time in AZ within a year where a armed private citizen assisted a police officer by shooting the suspect who was getting the upper hand on the LEO.

Glad to see the public coming to the aid of a LEO.
