At least two Missouri cities have ShotSpotter technology in their inner cities... St. Louis and Kansas City. It is apparently to help the cops detect where gunfire is coming from because citizens don't report it.

What the hell?? These neighborhoods ARE like war zones.

When will the poverty stricken demand neighborhood safety? What kind of culture is it that encourages lawlessness?

Thoughts?

Technology's answer for a lack of cultural standards.

It's my understanding that the system works rather well. It's damned sure more reliably accurate information than asking most people that live in these neighborhoods.

I heard of this a year or two ago.

Didn't know it's functional.

I suppose they'd have a busy night in this Southside suburb!

The article is too vague on the help provided. The police say it has helped ID more instances, but then goes on about needing funding to continue.

What form has the help taken? Are there any arrests, or better yet, convictions, resulting from this program that wouldn't have happened without the program? Has the crime rate gone down?

If the answers to my questions are 'no', then I question their need for the program, especially at the cost quoted.

I don't know that much about it. A friend lives in St Louis and told me about it. I was speechless. Seems the community doesn't call the cops because snitches get stitches, I guess...

I'm going to answer this one separately, because it doesn't fit with my other post. Anyway...

*A* short answer could be a culture that doesn't trust the justice system, but that's an incomplete answer. It's also ignorant from within their own neighborhood, IMO. Ok, I get that they don't trust LE. Some of that is their own doing, but they don't trust LE. It is what it is.

That being said, it still makes no sense. It's THEIR community. It's THEIR own people that they're actually being lawless against. Even if they don't trust LE, that doesn't make sense to translate to treating their own shabbily.

Right. My question was more rhetorically to them, not to you.

I'm pretty sure my city installed a few of these sensors. They talked about it in the local newspaper at any rate.

One hundred years on, the drug prohibition has made it much like it was during the height of the Volstead Act in the last century. It has created gangs, and it seems that virtually every gang member is armed and shooting.

And that's why I support the Terry Stop --stop and frisk. Even if no prosecution just confiscation. Something's got to be done to stop the violence.

Even ending prohibition against drugs?
