You know, I think I can believe that! :2razz:

I didn't hear that story before, but thanks. It's a good story (in that it illustrates the point well).

Yeah, sadly as a man you hit the point where you say to yourself:

"I can't figure-out a way to help those around me, but my first priority is to my wife & kids and I gotta' make a move here!"

When that day hits, it's a very sad feeling. But every time I'm back in the old neighborhood I (still got a few straggler buddies and a relative hanging-on), I look around and *know* I made the right decision moving my family out!

If I recall, your old neighborhood is getting gentrified....

I'm thinking of moving there, but it might be a bit pricey these days.

Nope.

Maybe the (Italian) neighborhood where my Mom and her relatives were from, but definitely not the (formerly Polish) neighborhood I grew-up with my Dad's side. It's a slum.

Unless you're thinking of the neighborhood down by the old ballfield? That's definitely on it's way up.

I thought it was Taylor and Damien-ish

I'm not sure I know what you're getting at, here?
The dead innocents, that 10%, are starfish. Badly paraphrased...

A young child was walking the beach with her friend and noticed that thousands of starfish had washed up on the beach to face certain death. As she walked along, she began throwing first one then another then another back into the water. Her friend watched and finally said, "Why are you bothering? There are THOISANDS of starfish. You can only throw in a few. What difference does it make?

The little girl looked at the starfish in her hand, gently tossed it back into the sea, and said, "It makes a difference to THIS one."

Pure schmaltz. But true.

For many years, forever, our answer to inner-city violence has been to rationalize that it's bad guys killing bad guys, as if that makes the killings lesser. But it doesn't. Not at all. And that 10%? They are innocents who got in the way, collateral damage. Dead starfish.

No, it is because the lives of the dead dont have much value, not enough anyways to get us to be honest about what is going on and to care.

10% is not enough to do the trick.

I've been trying to find out what the hell is happening. Seems to be mostly a result of turf wars for drugs, primarily displaced gangs which were moved from the housing projects out into the neighborhoods fighting for corners and drug houses.

Other factors I read about, but could not confirm:

1. Gang leaders are all in jail and the young bucks are running wild, shooting first and negotiating nothing
2. Guns being dumped on the street by the crate-full by illegal fire arms dealers
3. Police no-go zones resulting from a few publicized police shootings sparking near riots and prosecutions.

Its pretty simple actually. Its calle the Ferguson effect.

Violent crime is up and arrest are down.

That's certainly a part of it. Police no-go zones: places which are no longer patrolled; are on the rise. Cops will show up, but only after the fact. Even when called, they take their time, only showing up when larger numbers of them are available to respond.

Can't say I blame them.

Cabrini green turned into a no go zone so essentially its the same issue

Cabrini Green hasnt existed since 2010 - and was started to be demolished in 1995 and essentially emptied by 2000.

Thanks for demonstrating , once again, you know almost nothing about the issue you are expounding upon.

Isn't it fun when people who are not from a place try to tell you how things are there?

I remember when Werewolven (sp?) posted some idiotic thread about Rochester, NY, which happens to be where I live, telling me how life was here. Oh, that was interesting.

Lol ! Go back and read the post I was responding to before going off half cocked and making a fool out of yourself.

I did.

You still make no sense.

'No-go' areas dont exist.

The high crime areas are not 'no go' areas at all, given that street policing is distributed by crimes per area, the high crime areas of Chicago may have a much higher police presence than low crime areas.

But I know you heard of Cabrini Green once, so you must have all the inside info.

Cabrini Green was indeed a no go area...

unbelievable and sad, Chicago has already had 755 murders up to December21st 2016. This year in the Netherlands (a country of 17 million inhabitants) we had the lowest number of murders since 1973. In total (with just 1 day to go) we have had 108 murders across the country. I think it is staggering and insane that a city with a lot fewer citizens (less than 3 million) can have a murder figure of close to 7 times higher than an entire country. And I know, a lot of my country is agricultural and small countries but still, 7 times as much killings in a city about 6 times smaller than my country is just a bit insane.

This is going to be a real problem to solve and I don't think anybody has the answer for this problem yet. I know people do not like it but maybe banning guns from entire parts of that city (and prohibition, no gang colors allowed and no drugs anywhere in big parts in Chicago) might be the only option available because as long as there is so much poverty, so much guns and so much alcohol and drugs in Chicago, I do not know how it is going to get solved anytime soon.

And if you are caught selling drugs you get jailed and then a 10 year ban on living in Chicago or within 100 miles of that town (in designated "dry" and gun clean communities if need be).

Something has to be done, or we will go Robocop kind of society for Chicago.
