Since the freedom stealing Patriot Act formed this group of agencies, I'd say it need to be readdressed.

Abolished in full. We had enough agencies already without the necessity of creating yet another government agency. It doesn't do much, hasn't really protected us, and serves only as a potential threat to the rights and liberties of all Americans.

Why We Should Eliminate the Department of Homeland Security - Reason.com

A side debate started in another thread, where I asked why should this department be abolished. I usually just get/see talking points from leftwingers and some others about how this department needs to go. But why exactly? I've posted an article by someone who worked there, who thinks it need to go and provides details as to why.

Big question which probably needs experts to really address. DHS was created because separate agencies did not communicate effectively. I think we should definitely be able to reduce the number of agencies and responsibilities, but keep the structure of having them under one agency. Ideally the President and congress should be more involved in oversight, but this would require them to do less elsewhere.

That would require hiring Presidents and congressmen who dont feel govt is the solution to every problem, and to focus on security and justice. I dont expect that will happen.

Since the inception of the DHS, the intelligence agencies still don't communicate effectively.

When I see analyses of DHS's successes and failures I immediately think about James Q Wilson's old thesis about government bureaucracies in which he states that most agency reorganizations fail, but government bureaucracies work surprisingly well considering the constraints.

Abolish it: it's big gummit.

Abolished. NORTHCOM can take over many of the homeland defense duties since - hey! most of the homeland is in North America. CT should be handled by the CT experts at NCTC and elsewhere, regardless of where it is planned or occurring. If that means bringing in domestic LE and collection, well, hey, that's why SOCOM has the IATF and the FBI has CT as a primary mission. If Title 10/50 can't do it, Title 28 can.

Not trying to go off topic, but DHS was created based ONLY on the assumption that the story of 911 was true and accurate. Even the 911 Commission acknowledged the many holes in the story.

Was the creation of DHS really necessary if the story was not true? DHS was created even before the 911 Commission was formed and completed its study.

Kill it.

I think of Homeland Security and I think of a watered down, American Gestapo.

Agreed. And it gets in the way of, and pulls rank on, many other agencies.

Correct. And like any other agency that is looking over your shoulder and looking to gig you on any mistakes you make, it creates mistrust, suspicion and angst.
Folks I know who are still on the job, do their best to keep DHS uninformed.

I've always had my suspicions about the true activities of 911.

The fbi does a much better job stopping terrorists

I say turn the Department of Homeland Security into the Department of Homeland Insecurity.
