When Rahm Emanuel becomes political baggage

At a convention that featured mothers who lost children during deadly encounters with police, showcasing Mayor Rahm Emanuel would have been a grave miscalculation. His arrival at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia the day after Mothers of the Movement stood together on stage was, of course, by design.

Despite being a loyal creature within the ecosystem of President Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, David Axelrod, Joe Biden and others, Emanuel did not speak at the convention, nor did he land a high-profile seat next to them in the arena. Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle did.

If anything speaks to the damage the Laquan McDonald case has inflicted on Emanuel's career, it was the recognition by his own friends that he is a national political liability.

When bad things happen in cities with Republican mayors do you take the time to use one of your dozens of daily spam threads to engage in partisan hackery? Can you explain how a "Republican" mayor could've swept in and saved the day on this?

It's now completely legal to buy and own a gun in Chicago. Why hasn't all the gun violence stopped like the right said it would? Shouldn't these shootings have been stopped by good guys with guns? By being liberal it's almost as if Rahm Emanuel shot all of those people himself!

Can you cite examples of cities with republican mayors that have such a high and consistent murder rate? Which cities would you like to offer by way of comparison?
 
The OPs first article lists all the killings and it was remarkable how many victims were just sitting in their cars when someone walked up and shot them. Perhaps Chicago has a serial killer like the "Son of Sam" on the loose.
 
Chicago needs to take action and ban guns.

A bit hard, since most major cities are run by Democrats or Independents. In fact, Republican run cities are rather rare. Even in deep red Mississippi, most major cities are run by Democrats.. go figure. But there are some...

Miami run by a Republican.. and in 2014, it had a higher murder rate (murders per 100.000) than Chicago. This of course can change in the 2015 numbers which I cant find.

The gun violence won't stop, because most of the gun violence is between groups of violent gangs. The difference is, at least now the non-criminal element has a chance to defend themselves against these criminal gangs who never cared a single bit about the city's previous gun laws in the first place.

What do you suggest be done ... make Chicago a "Gun Free" zone like they did in "Dodge City" back in the wild west days ?

I suggest that the cops be allowed to proceed in the fashion that worked in the past...........
1. Profile
2. stop and frisk
3. kick ass, take names and raid every damn gangbanger's crib that they can find.... and eradicate the vermin. ;) That is my solution.

Of course......all the bleeding heart, girlie men of today...will object.

I'm sure if Rahm continues his favorite hobby of shutting schools down and laying teachers off things will magically get better.

To me it is the "bleeding heart, girlie men of today" that are willing to give up essential liberty to purchase temporary security.

I think this is more a function of ignorance than folks being cowards though. 12 years of school and we manage not to teach the basics principles on which this nation was founded ( individual liberty - legitimacy of authority - and so on) and the basics of Philosophy (logic, logical fallacy, what constitutes a valid argument).

The founders knew well the tactic of using fear of an external or internal threat to take away liberty. That is why they put individual rights and freedoms/liberty "Above" the legitimate power of Gov't.

B.Franklin "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security".

Stalin wrote a chapter in the textbook .. using fear to take away individual liberty - "Security for the Motherland"
Hitler also used fear ... urging folks to trade liberty for security. His program was "Fatherland Security"
Bush did the same thing "Homeland Security"

Bush made it our "Patriotic Duty" give up our rights and freedoms "Patriot Act".

One terrorist act and so many of these "manly men" of the US were reduced to sniveling cowards... hiding in a corner begging to give up their rights and freedoms if only they could be secure from the bad men with towels wrapped around their heads.

You can go cower with the cowards if you like but, do not expect me to pat you on back and do not call me a "bleeding heart" for not wanting to cower in the corner with you and beg to give up the freedoms and liberty that was purchased with the blood of our forefathers.

Yet more examples of how criminals really don't observe any gun restrictions, which are merely for punishing those who like something the gun banners don't.

Well, not liking something isn't any sort of reason to ban it from those that do.

I've never coward in the corner, that's why I became a cop. And I fought Bush on the Patriot Act personally, and through my representatives. I've never given up liberty for security.

I've never heard any conservative make the claim that all gun violence would stop, just that it would be curtailed. It's not a short term quick fix, either. Having an armed populace making substantial in-roads into this kind of violence would take at least a generation. In the meantime, you have a criminal element that is "eating it's own" with great effectiveness and leadership that is failing to take ANY steps to deal with it.

the top 100 or 200 violent people in the city. These are the people they need to remove from society for a very long time!
Work with the feds to charge in Federal court and when convicted send them out of state to serve their time.
Take the top 200 violent bad guys off the street and you will a a dramatic drop in violent crime.

Then for the life of me I do not understand why you would be for stop and frisk and profiling.

This is a violation of individual liberty.

Belief in freedom is not belief in freedom (only for things you agree with). Belief in freedom is about belief in freedom for things you disagree with.

If you do no want people messing with your personal liberty, then do not mess with the personal liberty of others.

This is not just some "o-gosh boys" this would help us do our job moment.

You are talking about messing with the Rule of Law and one of the most basic principles on which this nation was founded (Golden Rule).

There were some shootings (probably mostly gang members killing each other because of stupid laws that violate the principles on which this nation was founded - shootings that would never be happening if our Gov't had not violated the basic principles on which this nation was founded)

You believe that on the basis of "fear" over these shootings we should put restrictions on basic liberty and give Gov't a whole bunch more power.

You do want to give up liberty for security.

The solution is to repeal bad law - legalize pot immediately taking the money out of the game. Just like alcohol prohibition, when that ended so did the crime.
Legalize and regulate prostitution - (taking more money out of the game) thus decreasing the crime surrounding the business.

That would be a good place to start.
