Beaten Police Officer Didn't Use Gun for Fear of Backlash...

No.

I would rather a police man or woman got a bit beaten up than a thug got shot to death.

The thug, I'm sure, did get a significant education about being beaten up by the rest of the police at the time.

Being a plumber involves the high risk of asbestosis and the medium risk of death on the building site due to the general dangers there.

Being a police officer is less dangerous than this but still involves risk. Sometimes you will get into a fight. You will have been trained to fight. The training is very good. You will fight very effectively. You will be used to it. Occaisionally you will come out of the fight with some damage as it's never going to be a perfect world. That's the job.

I was in conversation with a British police officer who had had a situation where he found a building being striped of it's lead and copper by thieves. He knew that there was no back up availible due to other things going on so he went into the building with his stick out looking for a fight shouting "I am the police! I am arresting you! Let's have a fight!" They ran off so he only caught one at the scene but this allowed him to know who the others were and he got them as well later.

If the thought of a black eye and a broken rib is beyond the pale for you don't be a police officer.

If that happened in the US, one of the thugs would have put a bullet between his eyes.

If they had more appropriate and effective less-than-lethal tools, then none of this would have mattered.

What type of tools do you imagine would be used here? How much stuff should they have to carry? Which one would give you that 100% effective option so it "wouldn't have mattered"?

What tools specifically would you suggest? Tazers can kill, have killed before, police have been criticized each time it happened. Lots of people, especially those drugged up can ignore pepper spray. Batons? Can kill, but can also be considered as excessive use of force as it would still take a lot to get someone strung out down and out enough to cuff. So...what tools do you suggest?

And pepper spray is just as likely to get yourself, when using it in a close struggle, while a tazer might not even set properly and they are one fire one use tools.

Exalent policing.

In the UK the police expect to be fighting people often. Rolling about on the floor and fighting. That's part of the job. Sometimes they get the worst of it.

I am a plumber. Today I hit my left hand with my hammer on top of the place I had hit it 10 minutes before. So what?

Did you think you were going to die from hitting your hand with the hammer? Did your other hand have deadly intent?

A Chicago police officer who is hospitalized after she was severely beaten said she was afraid to use her gun because of the scrutiny she would have faced, Supt. Eddie Johnson said.

On Wednesday morning, police responded to a car crash at Roosevelt and Cicero on the city's West Side where officers encountered a man that police allege was violent and under the influence of drugs.

Three officers were hospitalized in the incident. One officer who was severely beaten told Supt. Johnson she was afraid for her life and afraid to use lethal force with all of the attention on the police department's previous actions and fatal incidents.

"She thought she was going to die.

Time to leave that liberal ****hole and find a cop job where the citizens, Chief or Sheriff, will back you.

But all the cops lived so there was no need to use the gun...

But all the cops lived so there was no need to use the gun...

Sure was. Is that so difficult to understand? What if one or more cops were killed by this asshole and no gun was used to stop him? After the fact is ok.....shoot him from the grave?

Are you joking?

I agree, the fact every cop in america doesn't carry a Zat Nik Tel is an outrage, if they could make them for the TV show Stargate SG-1 why don't our officers have them yet?

a female officer should not be taking on a male suspect with less lethal tools, period, his ass should either submit or get shot. when men assault women, women die. As what happened here, she recieved a lethal force beating for not using the proper tool.

If she was actually facing real death she would use her gun. Stop the hysterics. "Fearing for my safety" is code for being a chicken **** or unprepared to fight. Cops should all have to take mandatory jui-jitsu.

She lived. They all lived.

Blowing someone away for being scared should put you in jail for life.

Actually, if you fear a deadly force assault, you should use the gun, a reasonable fear or death or grave bodily harm ,and her injuries are knocking on the door of grave bodily harm, then a firearm is the apropriate tool. not only that but as sexist as it sounds, women get to use more force against a male suspect, a woman and a man getting into a hands on fight is 90% likely to lose and suffer grave injury or death in the process.

Factoring in the woman part i change my opinion but if men are around then no...

three officers.. one unarmed man....

Sounds to me like a need for better training. Or better hiring practices.

I hope the man who beat this cop gets the drug treatment he clearly needs! My prayers are with this poor 28 year old man. I can't imagine what he's going through now but my prayers are with him and his family.

Cop was stupid and has nobody to blame but herself.

Moron.

It doesnt give the timeline of events. I imagine that the other 2 came after or while she was being beaten.

The only training that would allow most women, badge or not, to defend herself against a drugged assailant is the the training she chose not to use. Which is the point being made.

I was lucky not to die when i walked under a scaffold were 1 second later a pallet of bricks fell off it. I have a persistent cough, for the last year, which I think may be the first signs of some sort of lung disease.

If your a cop you will be getting into fights. Some will be easy some not so good. You still can't just shoot every possible threat. You have a big stick and training and lots of other officers.

You are arguing after the fact. This incident could have very well left her dead. Two words: Force Continuum.

Precisely.

No hysterics on my part....never are. True, all cops should be trained in a martial art, but even then, those high on drugs often times have super human strength. Unless you were there, you cannot accurately comment on this.

your advocacy for rioting is bad...how do you not get that?

No such thing, you have no idea what you are talking about. btw, I was gone for 5 days, did you miss me?

Possibly, but like I said above, if you weren't there , you really can't comment accurately.

Easy for you to say, not being there and all.

Not always. Depends on where you are located. In the western states, backup can be an hour or more away....and normally is.

No one here is saying anything at all about shooting every possible threat....the OP is about being afraid to use your gun and save your life, because of seditious groups like BLM and chicken**** liberal government types, like Rahm Emanuel, that won't back you.

The obvious thing in Chicago these days, is that Emanuel has been keeping a low profile, that or the media doesn't want to interview him to spare him the embarrassment of ineptitude.
When liberal politicians are inept, the MSM will cover for them.

Not at all - she obviously violated her training, failed to use common sense, and exhibited poor judgement.

Then she whined about it publicly.

Painfully easy deduction.

She has no business holding a job that requires decisions harder than 'do you want fries with that?'.
