I don't know what he would have lost but I do know what he said he would lose. He said, "If I quit drinking I'll lose my SSI check, my Medicaid card, everything." At the time, being a drunk or a junkie was a disability that made you eligible for SSI. Now they have to go with Permanent Emotional Disabilities which you buy from a psychologist.

You have to remember, Justabubba, that being a bum, a deadbeat, or a fraud doesn't mean you're an idiot. Like liberals, they love to brag about how smart they are. I was picking up trash on the highway Sunday morning with some friends in a club and a bum came up and ask me for money for breakfast. I laughed and said, "Pick up trash with us and I'll buy you're breakfast." He didn't want to do that but a couple of the other guys said he should. As we picked up trash I asked if he always panhandled out on the highway where there was almost no foot traffic. He laughed and explain he and his friends were at the lakes have a party and he got stranded. "I panhandle at the old folk's building downtown. You get lots of money there." "They're generous?" He laughed and said, "No, they're scared."

So, perhaps if you met more "homeless" folks your overwhelming sympathy for 90% of them would dry up. Perhaps, just maybe, you might start encouraging them to quit the life instead of enabling them for life.
