Man vs. machine: L.A. sheriff's deputies use robot to snatch rifle from barricaded suspect, end standoff

hours-long standoff in the darkness of the high desert came to a novel end when Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies used a robot to stealthily snatch a rifle from an attempted murder suspect, authorities said Thursday.

Officials said the use of the robot to disarm a violent suspect was unprecedented for the Sheriff’s Department, and comes as law enforcement agencies increasingly rely on military-grade technology to reduce the risk of injury during confrontations with civilians.

Too bad the police in Columbus OH didn't have one of those to disarm that 13 year old with the BB gun....I reckon it's asking too damn much of a human peace officer to do that.

Least the robot didn't deliver a package of C4 to the assailant. [TX style]

He used this in an armed robbery.

Damn right it's asking too damn much!

Too bad the 13 year old was a little thug, criminoid law breaker, and too dumb to throw is gun down, BB or real.

The actions of the cop at this point seem fully justified.

If you haven't been a cop on the street, you can't walk in his shoes.

That would have resulted in one less puke clogging up the court system and getting back on the street to do more harm to innocent folks.

Kind of a cheap shot, don't you think?

Guessing at night, to the police, it looked as real as it needed to.

Yep.

That's correct. Even thou they are not considered a firearm, they aren't a toy either. They can put an eye out or even penetrate the brain thru the eye.
The news link shows that the author doesn't know a handgun from a rifle......but that's typical.

I have a pellet rifle that shoots a .17 cal. pellet at 1200 fps.....that's .22 handgun velocity.

Judging by the responses here, it does appear that way. I had forgotten that 'peace officer' is an ancient and long-gone thing.

Cops should be under current military engagement rules, don't fire unless fired upon and only if they can positively identify the target. I don't need to walk in cops shoes I walked a far tougher path. They'll get no sympathy from me. Its their chosen profession they can leave at ANY time. If I or another "civilian" shot that punk, they and theirs would have thrown us under the jail.

Sometimes I swear cops sound like bunch of whiny bitchy little girls. **** sandwiches come with the territory.

Not really. **** sandwiches come with a police officers job. They need to cowboy up and take it, its part and parcel of their job.
