There is no point in having fines and court costs if they are not enforced. This isn't debtor's prison to begin with. These are criminal cases. In civil cases, the plaintiff pays all those fees and costs upfront.

What good, exactly, does levying a fine, as punishment, do if its payment is optional? Are you suggesting that punishment (of a juvenile for a given offense) should be relative to ones parent's income or assets?

Wouldn't it be far less expensive to place these children in some kind of temporary foster care until the court fees are paid?

What good does it do if it's not optional?

Posted with caution: Not certain regarding the source. Seems legit, but I cannot find another source, and it's the type of thing the MSM tends to ignore.

Thread title slightly altered to fit

It's easy to see why the MSM ignores this issue. They must protect and project the image of the US as being exceptional, you know.

This is a travesty, but so are so many other policies in this exceptionally crass and cruel society we have. One might argue that the authorities are simply conditioning the kids for the high probability situation that they will sooner or later do real time in a real prison, in this country which stands head & shoulders above all other countries in the per capita rate of imprisonment.

Our system of criminal justice is exceptionally oblivious to any seeking of justice. But 'em in jail and let God sort 'em out, it's the American Way.

What good does it do if it's not optional?

It punishes the perp instead of perp's parent(s) or guardian, which is not a bad idea. If junior's crimes cost nobody (except the victims) that is not exactly justice.
