Poor defendants say they face modern-day debtors' prison

Oh please, show us Bernie's hypocrisy in this instance. I'm sure that any answer will do little more than reveal your ignorance in regards to various political matters.

Hilarious , stop making my case . :lamo

If receiving a parking ticket means missing a meal then you shouldn't be parking illegally.

And you've never gotten a ticket because you were 5 minutes late putting a quarter in the meter?

And on that point people who commit parking offenses aren't committing crimes. Those are administrative violations. Calling them crimes is way overstating the case.

Crimes, administrative violations, whatever. I've gotten lots of parking tickets. The occasional ticket is part of the expense of owning and operating a vehicle.

It's a tax. A bull**** tax at that. Just another way for the gummit to separate you from your hard earned dollars.

Well that's silly. There are some very good reasons why you should get tickets.

When the penalty's effect is greater on a person with a lower income - THAT is the "bat**** elseworld math"! A person with millions in their pocket is not affected to the same extent as a minimum wage worker when the fine is $50. So tell us, how is charging the 0.1 percenter the same fine as a poverty stricken person going to affect the bazillionaire in the same manner.

I have worked with the 0.1% crowd, $50 can be a tip to a valet at their favourite restaurant; to them it is the equivalence of 5 cents for most Americans.

So do you also support the same for jailtime A rich person missing work for a year costs him a lot more money then a person making minimum wage.

Something tells me for some reason you won't see that as fair.

That's an odd tax as I have been driving for about 20 years now and have yet to pay it. Then again I follow parking rules. It's really not that hard.

Why not make the fines dependent upon income? A person with an annual income of $500,000 can certainly afford to pay $1000 for a parking ticket while a Walmart employee will barely be able to afford paying $10, yet the impact on both could be seen as comparable. Let's make a criminal/civil system which is a tad more equal - less affluenza and more humanity

Sure, punish those that work and are successful a hundred times more than the deadbeat who is provided free legal aid and free everything ! Why not just fine the entire community that's the socialist way .

Aside from moving violations, which are a different matter, parking tickets are by and large about revenue generation. Nothing more.

NYC has something called "alternate side of the street parking" which are rules that specify certain days of the week where one side or the other of a street it is illegal park. Those rules were instituted to allow for street cleaners to clean. Many New York streets don't see a street cleaner for months let alone once a week - when I lived there last my street wasn't cleaned once in 4 years. Yet the tickets are still issues. Why? Because it raises money. It's a scam. Nothing more.

Do you happen to live in a large city with a myriad of, often conflicting, parking rules, or out somewhere where there aren't even parking meters?

Deornds on if you count Seattle a big city.

If you know that it is a $50.00 for parking in a certain spot, but decide to park there anyways and get caught, ......................whose fault is it but your own?

Being poor is no excuse, and making stupid decisions like that throughout life is quite possibly what led many of them to being poor in the first place.
