The State Department issued a warning on Monday urging U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to Iran, which has made the detention of Americans a priority.

The latest travel advisory, which emphasizes Iran’s desire to capture U.S. citizens, comes on the heels of a growing scandal over the Obama administration’s decision to pay Iran $400 million in cash on the same day that it freed several U.S. hostages.

The payment has been cast by lawmakers and others as a ransom payment and prompted concern among U.S. officials that Iran is making arresting Americans a priority.

Don't go to Iran or North Korea for that matter.

Problem SOLved.

Iran (and North Korea) almost never grant visas to Americans in the first place. The whole warning is moot.

Gosh. That's weird. It's almost as if paying ransom actually encourages kidnapping....

What ransom would that be? The imaginary one?

Iran has been doing this for years, this will not be the first time this warning has been given out. In fact I can at least find the same warning about arrest and detainment for US-Iranian people visiting Iran in 2010 so this is not news and this story has nothing to do with the deal the US and Iran made in the Hague to give them back their own money.

To be honest the same warning has been given out by the state department since May 31 2007.

That would be the $400 million cash that the administration appears to have "extra-legally" given in return for the hostages.

[emoji38] when you exchange money for hostages, that's called a ransom.

Nonsense, they money was theirs and according and was held by the US as ransom for the release of the prisoners and not the other way around.

We saved several billion in interest. Tip of the hat to Kerry and Obama.

That's like saying that you didn't pay for the ice cream, you just gave the guy the money in return for it.

Anybody American (or Westerner for that matter) that goes to Iran is literally a moron. I have ZERO sympathy and even less empathy if the are caught. In fact, I feel worse for the guy who sticks his head in the crocs mouth and the croc bites than I do for an American that goes to Iran and is detained.

This guy:

A whole billion? That will help pay off the 10 trillion or so under Obama...

The interest alone would have been really high, so indeed, good negotiating but that will never be admitted by a conservative because they never say anything good about Obama (at least that is the norm) so this too will never be admitted.

Maybe the republicans think they could have gotten away with not paying the money but it was their money and we agreed to a tribunal to settle these matters so the US really had no choice to abide by the ruling and make the best deal possible (saving the US billions in interest).

I know people love to deny reality, but they paid the US for ice cream, we did not deliver the ice cream nor did we give them back their money for that ice cream and now the US was (through a tribunal) forced to pay back the price of the ice cream plus interest.

The US used the fact that they still had the money for the ice cream plus interest in their pocket and would not hand it over until Iran gave them back their citizens. That is the art of the deal IMHO as Trump would have used it but because Obama did it, conservatives nonsensically claim it is ransom when it clearly is not. The US held Iran hostage and they had to release people to get to their own money.
