Brazilian federal prosecutors have charged the American journalist Glenn Greenwald for cybercrimes in a decision which has prompted outrage among press freedom activists – and celebration by allies of the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Leaks, subsequently published in several stories on the investigative site the Intercept Brazil, which Greenwald co-founded, appeared to show collusion between then judge Sérgio Moro and prosecutors and exacerbated questions of political bias of the investigations. Moro was subsequently named justice minister by Bolsonaro. After the leaks last year the president suggested that Greenwald could “do jail time” ...

Brazilian President Bolsonaro, an admirer of Donald Trump, praises the former military junta which ruled Brazil in the 1980s. He despises investigative journalism and press freedom. Journalists are among those in the crosshairs of the new hard right government there.

Just goes to show you. If it can happen in places like Venezuela, it can happen in places like Brazil.

Agreed. The scourge of populist authoritarians continues. Duterte in the Philippines, Orban in Hungary, Erdogan in Turkey. Thank goodness the American system of checks and balances is putting a stop to this scourge in the States.

(sigh)... okay, I'll bite.

Where are people in the US getting arrested for being journalist, or at least doing their jobs?

Nowhere thank god. It looks like the cautionary examples of countries with less robust democratic systems has spurred American lawmakers into action.

You implied that it was happening.

If you say that it's not happening anywhere, why did you try to imply it?

It was more of a broader point about the rise of populist authoritarians around the globe. Thankfully, Trump’s hostility towards the free press has been confined to words rather than actions.

So the press will get a pass on their open hostility towards the president, but he can't have a word in edgewise?

What exactly is this open hostility that you're speaking of?

I do think hacking into the phone lines of government officials and leaking government secrets do a lot of harm to any civilized society. Too many media outlets in America get away with obtaining information in various ways which in effect violate people's civil rights, including their rights to privacy and protection from spying and intrusion. It is also a crime too many media outlets are getting away with to leak government secrets illegally obtained. Governements have a duty and a need to keep secret government information secret.

Only sick criminals fear the truth which always comes out eventually.

Yes and do you know why?
In post #8 you asked for an example of Donald Trump's hostility toward the press and I gave it to you. We all know why he hates the press has to do with it reporting on him instead of praising him all the time like hate radio and Fox News.

So you're okay with blatantly showing just how dishonest you can be?

Because I stated that it was for some reason okay to give the press a pass on all of their lies & hostility. While Trump is for some reason forbidden from saying anything in response.

They called him a racist, a fascist, a Russian spy/asset and everything in between. With no evidence to back any of it up and spent just as much time attacking his supporters. All of his supporters, not just the weird fringe idiots that cause trouble.

If him speaking ill of them because of their own actions is a sign of some sort of oppressive agency on his part. Then forgive me for calling that BS out when I see it.

Thank you for demonstrating so neatly why the popularity of authoritarians is on the rise around the world.

Last year Donald Trump called the press "enemy of the people".

Obama felt the same way.....except that he attacked the press covertly

Trump Wages Press War, but Was Obama Administration Much Better? – Variety

Obama’s Justice Department accessed the personal email of a Fox News reporter and surveilled the reporter’s parents and colleagues. They seized the home, work and mobile phone records of journalists at the Associated Press.

Risen, who fought the administration to protect his sources, got so deep in his own legal battle with Obama that he selected a reading list for prison before the government finally backed off.

White House officials subverted the press in a number of ways while touting themselves as the most transparent in history.

Obama routinely banned news photographers from official events. He went months between press conferences and used social media to circumvent reporters.

First lady Michelle Obama took policy trips overseas with no press on her airplane. The White House scrubbed public visitor logs of names it didn’t want in the news.

The Obama administration posted the worst record in history for fulfilling requests for public records under the Freedom of Information Act.

You willful disregard of precedent only proves your own disregard of the truth.

Your political and emotional bias is noted.

Politics on the state and federal level, along with the courts, often use precedent as a matter of recalling fairness and creating structure.

Whataboutery is the children's term for "precedent"

That is your opinion, and I notice that you never complain about it to the liberal posters on here who are using the same practice about every 5 minutes on here.

You are a great team player. :2wave:

Gonna argue with cambridge internet tough guy or will you stay on topic?

Glenn’s reporting could actually do a lot of good for Brazil and prevent another Junta from rising.

I really don't care.

It was a amateurish 5th grade attack which I got a good chuckle from.

Politics is entertaining.
