Opinion polls show Bolsonaro’s approval ratings have plunged since his 1 January inauguration with 32% of Brazilians now considering his government bad or awful.

Bolsonaro’s crisis-packed Presidency has been plagued by factional struggles, mass protests, claims of mafia ties and corruption involving his family, a cocaine smuggling scandal involving a presidential plane and damaging revelations involving his celebrity justice minister, Sérgio Moro. Not to mention a series of bizarre gaffes – including sharing a pornographic video with his 3.4 million Twitter followers – that have led some to question whether Bolsonaro will even see out his four-year term.

A growing number of conservative voices are also now questioning his presidency. “His popularity is falling because people feel baffled by the things he is doing and saying,” said Eliane Cantanhêde, a columnist for the conservative Estado de São Paulo newspaper.

They are only now just baffled by the things he is doing and saying?

Gosh.

I'm not sure how any decent person could have actually supported someone who holds such heinous views to begin with.

World Epidemic?

When Trump hugs-up with a foreign leader, that right there is a huge tip-off that authoritarianism is close at hand.

How can they be baffled by the things he does and says. The ******* has been very transparent about his intentions.

I would not be surprised if the election was rigged. Heck it looks like the arrest of the previous presidents was done on fake evidence

Bolsonaro has said he is considering making his son the ambassador to the US despite no diplomatic experience at all.

Imitating the nepotism of Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner? /s

Lord Tammerlain:

Well considering that former president Da Silva (Lula) was running for the Presidency and was way ahead of all right-wing candidates running, I would say you're correct in your characterisation of a rigged electoral process. Now The Intercept Brazil has the proof that the goal of prosecuting former president Da Silva was to remove him from the race as a follow-up to removing President Dilma Rousseff from office and going after the leftist Workers' Party. It's the modern and cleaner version of 1964, a coup and junta which even today, Jair Bolsonaro vocally supports enthusiastically.

The fix was in from the get go. This is not just a Brazilian thing either. There are a network of right-wing think-tanks and advocacy groups all over South America and Central America determined to thwart local democracies if they are left-leaning and to replace them with right-wing and often very unpopular government by extralegal and extra electoral means. If you follow the money which funds these think-tanks and advocacy-groups the trail leads to powerful private donors and more modest public money from the good ole USA.
