I have been reading/hearing about the deaths in the Dominican Republic. The common denominator seems to be the “mini-bar” in the hotels. There was a picture of one of the mini-bars. It showed full size bottles inverted like you see in public bars, not the miniature bottles found in most hotels. We have cruised on lines that offer bottle service to the rooms and I asked one of the bar managers what becomes of the unused portion of the bottle provided for room service. He stated that they must dispose of the bottles because the seal is broken and there is no way to know for sure what is in the bottle.

The deaths are tragic; people tend to let their guard down while on vacation. Be careful out there....

That's probably the last place I'd go right now. Something very creepy is going on there.

I don't see what the problem is! The Dominican Republican is apparently one of those deregulated free market paradises where entrepreneurial capitalists are not harassed by the government and told what they can stock their mini-bar with.
If the libertarian capitalist tourist has a problem they can issue letters of marque and reprisal to the duly sworn public servants of the government of the Dominican Republic and the property owner and take action as a sovereign. If they cannot afford to do this on their own, then it is due to the fact that they made poor life choices by not preparing for any eventuality. [/sarcasm]

Dominicans should not be forced to submit to onerous regulations regarding methanol in their liquor! [more sarc]

Never quite figured it out. Dom Rep and Haiti share an island and one side is never able to catch a break....

NEVER consume anything from an 'honor' bar.

Only drunks and the desperate do that.

Have you visited the “reverse mortgage” thread?

The "Damn You Tom Sellack!" thread? Not yet. I've thought about it but I have a very dear friend who lost an incredible piece of real estate because her mother was too proud to say she needed help and she reversed mortgaged the house before she died without telling her daughter.

It was a gorgeous craftsman house located in the arts district of Venice CA right off Abbott Kinney Blvd. It was a real showpiece, and now it's gone and her daughter was left with a huge pile of bills.

When I first heard the theory that the deaths could be related to the "mini bar", I assumed the bottom photo. I was shocked to see large bottles turned upside down where people could dispense themselves.
I would NEVER drink from an opened bottle. From just substituting rail liquor for shelf, to spiking it, to diluting it with water to what appears now to be perhaps poisonous hooch. Just no!

The latest death of a 53-year old American woman comes after news of these questionable and sudden deaths. She still went. Now her body is in jeopardy of being cremated or embalmed, without toxicology being done, because their toxicology machine is "broken".

Good idea!

Another tip for you. More and more hotels don't include a mini fridge. They will provide one for a fee or for free if you have a medicine that needs to be refrigerated.

They've never asked to see my medicine.

I've heard the latest news is that they think the resort(s) are buying their liquor from bootleggers, that the gov. is in on it, and that there is a cover-up going on.

Time will tell.

Let's all calm down and wait for the facts to come in.

The Dominican Republic depends on tourism a lot.

If tourists do not visit, then many people in the D.R. will have to emigrate.

So let's do all that we can to help the tourism industry in the D.R.

What with the toxicology machine conveniently breaking down, I'm thinking this involves the authorities. DR officials are doing everything in the "What not to do" playbook if you want to be transparent and save your tourism industry.
I've never been and never will go.

You've got a point. Sad thing is, if government cronyism is at play, it's not going to change.

Has there been suspicious deaths reported of people from other countries?

Well, if it turns out that it was a scam featuring adulterated bootleg hooch, we might just have to make it [sarcasm]clear that they need to have some better "evil socialistic freedom destroying" godless government regulations.[/sarcasm]
You know, the kind that say it's against the law to do stuff like that, and that people who continue doing it might lose their freedoms.

We always request that it be emptied when we check in.

Ah, good call. I worked in a lot of high end hotels in my youth (Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay, Post Ranch Inn, etc...) and no one ever asked for that.

In addition to the hotel deaths, an American woman was beaten quite badly in the DR this week.

I also think the DR is where Big Papi (David Ortiz) of Red Sox fame was shot last week.

I wouldn't go there at this time. Too much bad hoodoo going down.

I think the state Dept has issued warnings and the FBI is down there.
