Rogue Valley:
Unconventional Warfare does not necessarily focus on strategic or operational combat. I know you know this but for the benefit of other readers I'll explain in detail. It is a wide-spectrum type of warfare involving diplomatic, informational (propagandistic), dis-informational, legal, economic, financial and conventional warfare designed to undermine adversaries from without and within. To this end the US Military enlists the services of Intelligence branches of the US Government, the Department of State, the Treasury Department, the Commerce Department, the Justice Department, many other branches of the US Government, organisations and NGOs, humanitarian organisations, corporations, trusts and international trade organisations, international finance and commercial institutions, foreign states, proxy militaries and paramilitaries of foreign states or non-state actors, mercenaries (PSMCs), private intelligence firms and organisations, public relations firms and media systems, police and training personnel, etc. All of this is coordinated by a hybrid civilian and military leadership in order to effect change in a targeted country or region which is hostile to that change occurring. It is mostly executed covertly and often with plausible deniability.
If combat is needed it is usually small scale, tactical engagements with lots of stand-off support or is covert infiltration or long-range reconnaissance so as to shape the combat space for insurrection or wider conventional warfare, do assassinations or sabotage; should the Unconventional warfare need to morph into something bigger and more direct.
This is what the USA is presently doing in Venezuela, Columbia, T&T and perhaps Brazil with an eye to forcing regime change in Venezuela. By regime change I don't mean just removing Maduro and his inner circle. This regime change by the US Government and its allies is aimed at disabling and removing Chavismo-style socialism from the whole population's political spectrum and replacing it with a right-wing, neo-liberal regime which will allow foreign exploitation of Venezuelans and their resources at far less advantageous terms then they were under Chavez. The de-Chavismo campaign will likely involve violence, murder, disappearances and heavy-handed state oppression under very undemocratic state control as it did in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Guatemala and Nicaragua, etc. in the past. It may very well trigger protracted guerrilla civil war with a brutal COIN campaign to end Chavismo in blood.
That's the Eliott Abrams play-book from Guatemala, El Salvadore, Nicaragua and Iraq, which Bolton, Pompeo, Pence and Trump are going to unleash on Venezuela once the Maduro Regime is removed from power and the purges and political realignment start.
Cheers.
