Venezuelan scavengers vie with vultures for Brazilian trash

PACARAIMA, Brazil (Reuters) - Surrounded by vultures perched on trees awaiting their turn, Venezuelan migrants scrape out a living scavenging for metal, plastic, cardboard and food in a Brazilian border town’s rubbish dump. Trapped in a wasteland limbo, they barely make enough to feed their families and cannot afford a bus ticket to get away and find regular work in Brazilian cities to the south. They blame leftist President Nicolas Maduro for mismanaging their oil-producing nation’s economy and causing the deep crisis that has driven several million Venezuelans to emigrate across Latin America. “I left because I was dying of hunger. We are trying to get ahead looking through this rubbish. Every night I pray to God to take me out of here,” said Rosemary Tovar, a 23-year-old mother from Caracas. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans have fled the political and economic upheaval in their country through Pacaraima, the only road crossing to Brazil, overloading social services and causing tension in the northern border state of Roraima. More than 40,000 Venezuelans have swollen the population of state capital Boa Vista by 11 percent, Mayor Tereza Surita told Reuters.

A dozen Venezuelans scramble to grab bags of rubbish that tumble from the Pacaraima trash truck twice a day. They then sift through the piles as fetid plumes of smoke rise from the smoldering landfill. Sometimes they scavenge at night using headlamps. “We are looking for copper and cans, and hopefully something valuable, even food,” said Astrid Prado, who is eight months pregnant. “My goal is to get out of here. Nobody wants to spend their life going through garbage.” Charly Sanchez, 42, arrived in Brazil a year ago and has not been able to get to Boa Vista to get his work papers so that he can find employment. “We live off this. We make enough to buy rice, maybe some sausage, but not enough to buy a ticket to Boa Vista,” he said. On a lucky day he said he had found a discarded cellphone, but not today. Some spaghetti, a small jar of sugar and a bit of cooking oil was Sanchez’s pickings for the day. Tovar criticized Maduro for denying that Venezuela is facing a humanitarian crisis. “He is so wrong. Look at us here in this dump,” she said. “If Maduro does not leave Venezuela, I will never return there.”

Quite right. Maduro has literally turned Venezuela's economy into a stinking mess.

The poor of Brazil and Columbia also pick through garbage dumps to survive until, in the case of Brazil, they are driven off by the armed authorities. Notice the vultures too.

Poverty and desperation in South America are not limited to Venezuela alone. Nor is state sponsered violence against the state's own people. As bad as the Maduro regime is, it is far behind Brazil and Columbia in human rights abuses. Venezuelans must be the ones that change Venezuela for the better, not the foreign powers of America, Brazil and Columbia by cooperative economic, unconventional and often-threatened overt military action. Ironically the real vultures in this sad assault on the Venezuelan state are the foreign neo-liberals looking to tear off control of the rich oil production from the battered carcass of the Venezuelan state, bled by manifest destiny and pommelled by the Munroe Doctrine as per John Bolton's recent public statements.

And now the aggression is widening to engulf Cuba and Nicaragua too. The leviathan of the north will never be satisfied. It's time to burn the public buildings of Washington DC once again and I hope the American people are up to the job. Regime change is needed now in America far more than in Latin America and it's time that Mr. Trump, Mr. Pompeo, Mr. Bolton, Mr. Minuchen and Mr. Abrams should be removed from their offices and tried for attacking foreign states without Congressional authorisation and for contributing to crimes against humanity by destabilising already shaky states.

No Cheers for Trumpian America.

Are you actually making a "whataboutism" defense of starvation and ruin in Venezuela?

Are you actually making a "whataboutism" defense of starvation and ruin in Venezuela?

Jack Hays:

Not whataboutism at all. Columbia and Brazil are directly involved in this unconventional warfare led by the USA. Therefore, since the pretext for regime change in Venezuela is largely based on how the Maduro Regime is allegedly mistreating and depriving its people of the necessities for life, the humanitarian angle for regime change must be compared to the humanitarian records of the states which the US hegemon has enlisted to help it change regimes in Venezuela. Thus not whataboutism. The Columbian regime has tens of thousands of victims dead and poverty is as bad as in Venezuela (pre the 2017 round of sanctions and trade interference imposed by the USA and its allies). The Brazilian record in poverty relief has been poor, even under the left-wing leadership of Lula and Rousseff but was much worse before and after them. The Brazilian record in human rights is very poor and considering the the sitting president of Brazil has endorsed that historical violence and is emulating it once again (right now) that is germane to proving the moral bankruptcy of the US-led efforts to paint Venezuela as an exceptionally atypical regime in Latin America, when it is not. Two of the most vicious Latin American regimes are active participants in this humanitarian regime change facade and that needs to be pointed out and highlighted to objectively evaluate the credibility of US claims about regime change.

Maduro and his clique have to go, but their removal must come by the Venezuelan people doing so, hopefully peacefully. Maduro has been able to use the threat of foreign economic and military intervention to expand his hard power, to mobilise collectivos and to turn the Venezuelan Bolivarian state into an Egyptian-style military junta where the army controls the key levers of the economy. The threats and actions of the USA have been as instrumental to this perversion of the Bolivarian State as has been the greed and corruption of the Maduro Regime. Given that your foreign policy has played a significant role in creating this mess in Venezuela, your state's claims of wanting to do this for humanitarian reasons rings hollow and empty. This is about squashing socialism, deterring economic nationalism and feeding the insatiable neo-liberal appetite for resources (oil, minerals and cheap labour) by using neo-conservative militarism and intervention to achieve those goals. The humanitarianism is just kabuki theatre which is why international aid agencies have abjured the US-led humanitarian programme and are working independently to deliver aid to Venezuelans in need.

Whataboutism would be me citing the US role in supporting the present Honduran regime despite flagrant election fraud in last year's election plus brutal repression of an angry grass-roots opposition and supporting that evil regime as it and drought are driving Hondurans from their homes and farms to seek refuge in America. In an America where they are vilified and where they are dehumanised, then caged, separated from their children and deported despite the US policy in their home country which created their misery. That's whataboutism and therefore I would not do it without admitting openly that it is and is being used as a rhetorical device. I openly admit that my last paragraph was whataboutism and used for rhetorical impact.

Cheers.

"unconventional warfare led by the USA" -- There is no such thing in Venezuela.

Your post is mere whataboutism because you are defending the indefensible.

That's your style JH. Clip the quote to remove the jusitifying argument and then declare an opinion of yours as a fact. Have a nice day as you twist what others say in order to give false foundation to your opinions.

No cheers for you.

Take tips, leftists...its your future.

Wow. Is that gonna happen in Canada and Sweden and New Zealand? I guess it's a good thing we're all enjoying life while we can, huh.
Better work over-time on The Wall. Walls plural, come to think. Put another ten feet on top, too.

The quote was clipped because the dishonesty of that which remained rendered the rest superfluous. There can be no justifying argument for a lie.

Who literally gives the first **** about Canada?

What do you want, a list of names?
What makes you think I would want a list of idiots that care about Canada? I care about the ****hole the idiot leftists in this country are creating by promoting idiotic social programs and flooding the streets with 78,000 homeless illegal immigrants a month.

Canada? Not a blip on the ****ing radar.

Jack Hays:

Did you clip the quote? Yes you did. Did you excise the arguments to support the remanents of the quote you included? Yes you did.

Remove the factual basis for any argument and you can call anything a lie. That is one of the cornerstones of modern public relations and propaganda. Clearly you have learned this well in your time as an alleged employee of the CIA.

There is no lie. Venezuela is for the Venezuelans to fix. The foreign intervention is not wanted by the vast majority of Venezuelans including most of the ones who want to remove Maduro from office. Your own national security advisor has admitted that this is about getting access to Venezuelan oil for American and other investors (a claim that President Donald Trump is also reported to have made as reported by Andrew McCabe), has admitted that this is about attacking socialism everywhere in the Western Hemisphere, has admitted that the Monroe Doctrine is alive and well and that it is the justification for throttling Veneezuela and now beginning to move against Cuba and Nicaragua. They seem to have forgotten about Bolivia for the moment, but I'm sure that's just an oversight for now. Thus the verifiable facts strongly indicate that the motivations for this are neo-liberal greed and neo-conservative interventionism. It reminds me of the last days of the Salvadore Allende Regime in Chile when then President Richard Nixon said make Chile "scream" under economic pressure from the US before the bloody-minded general's took power and killed or disappeared thousands. There was no humanitarian intention in September 1973 with respect to Chile and there is no humanitarian intention in US-led regime change in Venezuela now.

So spin your lies, edit out the contradictory facts presented by others and declare falsehoods to be truths if you must. Others here on this forum are wise and savvy enough to look behind the curtain of deception and see the frightened, fraud-peddling little men who claim to be the wizards of all. His name is President Donald Trump. His name is Vice President Mike Pence. His name is Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, His name National Security Advisor John Bolton. His name is Special Envoy to Venezuela Elliot Abrams. And I suspect his name is forum contributor Jack Hays too.

No cheers for you.

You only wish your country could be a ****hole like Canada. Canada, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, New Zealand, a dozen of liberal countries are putting your bumper-sticker pseudo-ideology in the shade. All you neo-cons get all giddy and triumphant about every bit of bad news out of Venezfrigginuela but when successful liberalism is pointed out to you it's "Who cares about that?"
Why do you care about Venezuela? Answer- you don't. Unless there's really bad news about it, then Venezuela is a powerful affirmation of neo-conservatism and becomes very important.

Come back and tell us about it after you spend a week in Caracas. Venezuela isn't even fit to visit. In Cuba one must watch what one says or be thrown in jail. Colombia and Brasil doesn't have 5% of the problems Venezuela has. I have traveled to Brasil extensively and plan to visit Colombia next week. I would be pleased to retire in either. "Regime change in the USA"?!?!?! I'm not thrilled with the culture here, but the prosperity is undeniable.

Venezuelans can't fix Venezuela. It is being bled dry from the occupying Cubans. Venezuelans are being held captive by a foreign power.

Merely confirmation of previous lies. The fact that Maduro's cheerleaders claim something does not make it less of a lie. The US does indeed have poor relations with Venezuela, largely provoked by the Venezuelan regime. That is, however, well short of "unconventional war." Again, if you want your posts to be read in full they should not open with a lie.

Its comical that a steady stream of 'Canadians' cant wait to run to this site and talk abut us and I have to be honest, I dont see anyone here giving the first **** about your pathetic little ****ry.

And you ARE correct...I DONT much give a **** about Venezuela...not my zoo...not my monkees. I DO care that idiot leftists are desperately working to try to turn our country into ****holes like Venezuela. We already have huge problems in the leftist socialist Utopias like LA, San Fran, Portland, etc.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The degree of insight required to recognize that the American left is desperate to turn the US into a ****hole like Venezuela is astounding.
It's reassuring, too, to know that you and your ilk are maintaining the vigilance needed to prevent such a tragedy. Don't ever let anyone stop you from preparing for, even encouraging, the irreparable fracturing of American society. And don't ever let 'reason' and 'sanity' interrupt your poisonous fantasies.

You will care when those monkeys belong to Hezbollah and train in Venezuela to attack the USA. We either deal with terrorist threats where they live and train or we deal with them on US soil with the associated casualties. Furthermore, Venezuela is acting as a drug superhighway to the USA.

I care the moment they target us.

As for the drug pipeline...yeah...its true that America is a destination for drugs, but hell...its not liek we arent creating the marketplace. But there IS a simple solution...arrest drug traffickers and throw them in a ****ing hole for life. Target the kingpins. We are dong that and will continue doing that.
