The loony left will stop at no ends.

Jair Bolsanaro, a man of faith running to restore the civil rights of honest Brazilians to bear arms and live in safety free of criminals and public corruption is in hospital after a leftist attempted to asssasinate him.

Wow. Nothing a bit closer to home to get your rage outed about? Or is it all like a Phil Spectre 'wall of sound' production?

What, am I not allowed to support the rights of Latinos to choose their own governments by free election?

The article says Jair Bolsanaro is representing the Social Liberal Party (PSL). I don't know about you but it sounds like he's a socialist liberal lefty to me. So he's a religious man...but then so is his attacker...

"....Adélio Bispo de Oliveira, 40, is a left-wing supporter who has been very vocal in his criticism of Mr Bolsonaro.....

His relatives said that he seemed to have mental problems and that they had lost contact with him.

They told O Globo newspaper that he was very religious and spent most of this time alone, reading the Bible.

It's interesting that Brazil doesn't seem to have any right wing parties. Perhaps that's because of the authoritarian, right wing, military dictatorship they were forced to live under for 20 years.

I wouldn't assume that 'Socialist Liberal Party' means what you think it means.

EMNofSeattle:

Jair Bolsonaro is a far-right, ultra-nationalist and authoritarian candidate who has traditionally advocated for violence and state/military authoritarianism for Brazil. He supported and sang the praises of the military junta rule in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. He has advocated for Brazilian police and the military to use extrajudicial killing against urban gangs and the urban poor. In 2008 he advocated for the forced sterilization of the poor of Brazil. He is an advocate for using torture in both interrogations and to punish political enemies. In the impeachment trial of former president Dilma Rousseff he dedicated his impeachment vote to the military officer in charge of Rousseff's torture under the 21 year period of military rule.

The man is evil and his long-standing advocacy for violence, torture, authoritarian rule, state-sponsored class warfare, xenophobia and racism came back to bite him when he was stabbed at a political rally. Live by the sword and you shall likely die by the sword. Although I hope he recovers, learns from this experience and turns down a new pathway, I also hope he loses big time in the upcoming presidential elections as his kind of leadership will likely turn Brazil into a nightmare regime.

Cheers?

Not true, Bolsonaro is described as a far-right and populist candidate who in the past has voiced positive comments about Brazil's military dictatorship in the 40s. In other words, he's a Trumplike figure.

Until Bolsanaro took over the party, the Social Liberal Party was exactly what I thought it was...a socialist liberal party.

"...In 2015, the PSL underwent a reform led by the internal social liberal wing "Livres", with names such as political scientist Fábio Ostermann and journalist Leandro Narloch reinforcing the party's affiliation with social liberal policies.[13][14] However, on 5 January 2018, controversial right-wing politician Jair Bolsonaro became a member of the party, which prompted the "Livres" wing to leave the party in protest of Bolsonaro's social conservative views. After the exit of Livres, the party followed a national-conservative path. Since then the party has discussed a name change, either to "Republicans" (Republicanos) or "Mobilize" (Mobiliza).[15] The party also changed its colors from purple to the more nationalist blue, yellow and green, the colors of the flag of Brazil..."

Since Bolsonaro's entrance in the party, the party has changed much of its ideologies, abandoning its former social-liberal policies while keeping its economic liberal policies, supporting privatization and decentralization while at the same time adopting very conservative social policies, opposing same-sex marriage, abortion, legalization of marijuana and the teaching of gender identity in schools.[17]

The party is openly anti-communist, and its members are prohibited from making alliances with left-wing political parties.[17]...

The party doesn't appear to be too popular.

"While keeping it's economic liberal policies, supporting privatization and decentralization . . ."

That doesn't sound like 'liberal' in the same manner that we use the word here. It really sounds like this party was NOT 'socialist' and until this guy came into the picture, social policy resembled our left while economic policy resembled our right. According to this excerpt, this party has only changed on social issues..

Liberals here support a mixed economy which includes both private and public enterprise, too.

The Social Liberal party seems to have a shifted a lot further to the right than even the GOP has, especially on ideology and social issues...and so quickly, too. Maybe the high crime and murder rate in the flavelas has something to do with it.

There's a huge difference between supporting a mixed economy, and generally being in favor of privitization and decentralization. No American liberal advocates for more privatization than what we already have. And no, third-way Democrats don't count, as they aren't actually liberal, and closely resemble the GOP of the 90's, economically, speaking.

Public corruption and uncontrolled crime absolutely will shift public opinion, Brazil’s economy has been destroyed by the theft from the State oil company

He’s a terrible person, there’s no doubt about that. However I think if the policies he’s espoused if carried out properly will reduce a lot of Brazil’s problems. He’s for instance in favor of opening up Brazil to trade and reducing regulations on opening businesses, Brazil is in economic freefall right about now, unemployment is high, the country has 65,000 murders a year, etc

So I mean it’s a terrible position, but Brazil politics is far different then ours, and while such a candidate would never win in our system, its not our choice
