I'm not sure I agree that the leftist government of Venezuela is any more repressive than its always been. It's possible, what has changed isn't the repressive nature of a leftist dictatorship but rather the openness of the resistance. People are desperate and are speaking out and no leftist government tolerates that whether it's Stalin's, Castro's, or Maduro's. It is President Obama's dream.

Myself and many others predicted that this would happen years ago. Socialist leftist governments always become authoritarian because that's the only way they can enact their socialist agenda. Then as resistance from the grass roots wells up they become more and more violent in their repression of the opposition, and then this builds until the government or the opposition collapses. If the former the country and it's people are left destitute, except for the leaders, of course, which take more and more of the remaining resources for themselves and those who keep them propped up.

No worse than Cuba and probably less so than Assad.

I can't imagine that is supposed to be a positive thing. It's like saying someone is no more dishonest than Trump or Clinton.
