JERUSALEM — Recording or taking unauthorized pictures of Israeli soldiers clashing with Palestinians could soon bring criminal charges and penalties, if legislation proposed by members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hawkish coalition is enacted into law.

On Sunday, the Israeli government endorsed the proposal, which seeks to criminalize the filming and/or distribution of images and video footage showing certain Israeli military operations — if the aim is “hurting a soldier’s spirit” or “harming national security.” A conviction for such crimes could carry prison terms of five to 10 years.

It seems that the great Middle Eastern democracy of Israel is once again buckling under the weight and pressure of mini-empire and the growing Israeli security state. Draft legislation to criminalise the filming, photographing or reporting of IDF soldiers when such reportage could be construed to hurt IDF morale or to threaten state security effectively criminalises anyone from reporting on alleged abuses perpetrated by the IDF against the Palestinian people or anyone else for that matter. The legislation seems to be aimed at Israeli organisations which regularly record, report and archive evidence of IDF abuses but may be expanded to include non-Israelis as well.

Unable to justify the brutal truth of what the IDF and the Israeli state are doing to the Palestinians, the State of Israel has chosen to weaponise the law in order to suppress the future reporting of alleged IDF abuses in a free press. Sentences of between five and ten years imprisonment and very heavy fines for persons and institutions are being considered. The free press in Israel is further imperilled. Israel is drifting into authoritarian rule in the service of a hyper-militarised, security state.

What price empire? What price strength?

Cheers.

Its interesting that when i was researching the new historians I ran across a letter decrying their info, not challenging its veracity, but worrying that if foreign Jews learned about it they might stop supporting Israel.

So the propaganda is more valuable than the truth.

You guys really need to read Tuvia Tenenbaum's book. It helps explain all this a lot better.

Now I don't expect anything to come of this initiative and don't support it, but you really don't have the slightest idea what the actual concern is here and in any event are not interested in understanding anything that would interfere with your narrative.

Which incidentally is precisely the problem with the propaganda media acting against Israel within its borders.

Ffs.

Suppressing simple reporting of facts with harsh penalties is a classic pratice of propagandists.

Only allow the information you want people to see to be seen.

Israel is a nation based on propaganda.

My wife went to israle under the Birthright program.

She was very impressed. Until she learned that the idf soldiers she met by chance during her trip are met by "chance" by every birthright group. The whole program is PR for Israel.

Disney version only.

I recently read an article someone here posted that was supposed to be a counter to the views of the new historians. It was full of stuff saying that other people had covered aspects of their work and thus there was " nothing new " to merit the term New Historians. Once again the content didn't do much in the way of debunking much if anything of their conclusions
So the propaganda is more valuable than the truth.

It's the only war Israel can lose and as such has immense importance

Not surprising for a country that allows their soldiers and citizens to freely murder stateless refugees with just a slap on the wrist.

Any who have made the effort to find out just how the Palestinians are and have been treated by the IDF and the Israeli state will not be surprised by these moves

This is aimed primarily at the Israeli human rights groups that have , through their bravery and dedication , managed to show to the world just some of what goes on between the Palestinians , IDF and illegal settlers in Occupied Palestine.

Clamping down on the freedom to film and report in your own country is one thing , foisting it upon people whose country your are illegally occupying and settling is something else altogether and should be resisted by anyone and everyone regardless of where they stand in this conflict.

lol. right. Read and try to understand or don't. But please don't pretend that you are interested in anything other than your own propaganda.

No thanks.

The fact that it is even being considered shows just how worried the Israeli state leaderships have become about the truth spilling out of the situation wrt the treatment of Palestinians . The more that seeps out about the violations the less support of Israeli state policies there will be and the more of a pariah it will become.

We understand it well so your comments above regarding peoples alleged ignorance should be treated with the contempt they deserve imo

Which incidentally is precisely the problem with the propaganda media acting against Israel within its borders.

I couldn't read the link but from what I gathered in the clip it was concerned with the filming IDF soldiers " involved in operations" against Palestinians and mentioned nothing about it being applicable only to Israel and Israelis. If it were to be expanded to cover the occupied territories , as it surely would seeing as this is really what they are referring to , then that is yet another flagrant violation of Palestinian rights.

If you want to gag your own reporters in a turn to authoritarian rule , that's your business. Applying it to those you occupy is a violation of the rights and sovereignty of that people. So once again we see , from the so called supporters of Israel , the sanctity of and respect for sovereign territory/borders being extended only to Jewish people and the Israeli state with the violation of neighbouring folk being fully justified in that highly hypocritical mindset

Its surprisingly similar to our issues with policing here in the states.

Its hard to maintain a positive relationship where one side is always held accountable for their actions and the other rarely if ever is .

there are already enuff folks around the globe that care not a thing for Israel but go ahead & drive your own people to despise you, Israel.

Bravo ...........

So they don't shoot kids in the back?

Some moments say a lot, like the time a sharpshooter gunned down an Israeli doing his job. Somehow that doesn't comport with any notion of Rule of Law I've seen.

We have an odd relationship with Israel. But that will correct itself, given time. The two countries are headed in different directions. So nothing will change, but when it does, it will be dramatic.

Which is not say this is what I want. It would be much better for both countries to take a step back, before things get worse.

CJ 2.0:

Which book of Tuvia Tenenbom are you referring to? I Sleep in Hitler's Room, Catch a Jew, The Lies They Tell, or Hello Refugees?

Cheers.

Catch the Jew. The others are travelogues of sorts about Germany and the US.
