U.N. General Assembly repudiates Trump on Jerusalem decision despite his threat of U.S. aid cutoff

Oren Dorell
USA TODAY
Dec. 21, 2017

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly Thursday to repudiate President Trump’s controversial declaration recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Trump threatened to withhold aid in retaliation for a vote condemning his position. The U.N. body voted 128-9 to declare Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital "null and void." Thirty-five nations abstained. The measure, drafted by U.S. ally Egypt, urges nations to support U.N. resolutions dating to 1967 when Israel captured East Jerusalem from Jordan, that call for Jerusalem’s status to be decided through negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians. Israel says a united Jerusalem will remain its capital, while Palestinians want it to cede East Jerusalem as the capital of a future, independent Palestinian state. Only a handful of countries recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, while most others maintain embassies in Tel Aviv. The resolution says “that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council.”

Trump warned Wednesday that the vote could impact “billions of dollars” in U.S. aid. “Let them vote against us, we’ll save a lot,” Trump said. “We don’t care. This isn’t like it used to be where they could vote against you and then you pay them hundreds of millions of dollars and nobody knows what they’re doing.” Americans are “tired of being taken advantage of” at the U.N. “and we’re not going to be taken advantage of any longer,” Trump said. Thursday's vote at an emergency meeting of the General Assembly comes after the U.S. vetoed the same measure in the Security Council on Monday. The remaining 14 Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, including key U.S. allies such as Italy, Japan, Britain, France and Ukraine.
While the five permanent members of the Security Council — the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China — had veto power in the first vote, there are no vetoes at the General Assembly.

128-9. The Trump/Haley extortion threat bullied few. They again look like the fools they actually are.

How is it that Trump threatening to cut off aid money over a vote is NOT a crime, but Rosie O'Donnell offering money to senators for their vote IS a crime?

One is blackmail. The other bribery.

(for the record, I think rosie o'donnell is guilty of attempted bribery)

Sounds good to me, take away the aid!!! I don't think the UN should have any say where Israel declares it's capital nor if the USA moves it's embassy there either....double the win

The aid was bribery in the first place... the aid is there to buy US influence... And I'm not sure if nation to nation ultimatums are considered personal bribery in our law... that's just international relations in general.

You don't think Obama bribed countries to do what he wanted? The payouts to Iran?

American aid should come with certain influences. Our foreign policy throughout the post-World War II era and the later Cold War was based on our ability to create a global capitalist economic system (IMF, Breton Woods, etc.) and offer an economic handout. The Soviets lost because they could not keep up with the dollar and our regional influences that denied them room to play. But to callously toss economic threats in such a public manner (take names?) over a controversial international issue that had only to do with internal political and campaign retardation is so far beneath the American reputation. But sure, let's take aid away so that Russia or China can sweep on in and assume the influential roles in regions around the globe. Let us undo what we have achieved since 1949...um...cuz.

But this is just more of the same current theme. Conservatives will cheer for this, because they appear to find great joy in making things difficult and angering even our allies. It's the whole irrational bitterness thing that is represented best by their uncontrolled lashing about. Their fear of having to share this world with the rest, which has only grown within the capitalist system that we wanted them to thrive in, has them applauding unstatesman-like insults to NATO, the Brits, the UN, Arab governments, the Chinese, etc. In the end, their irrational and ignorant fears is placing Russia and China in a leadership position as more and more start considering that American global leadership is on its way out. Russia, less so, but even Putin looks like more of a leader to the world than the orange garbage in the White House. Whatever happens with Syria, it is going to be a Russian victory over the U.S. on many levels (from Obama's foreign policy weakness to Trump's ignorance). And by playing this shallow "America first," or neo-isolationism nonsense, rising economies like India and China have found more room to maneuver. Ultimately, Conservatives are opening the doors and red carpeting the path for China's rise - exactly their fears.

It truly is a special time when Americans enthusiastically applaud a world where almost the entire UN and the Brits and Russians stand together with the Arab world and condemn the U.S. over the continued idiocy of a seated President. The man, and his flock of dip****s, are an insult to what America used to be. We are actively giving our moral and economic superiority away because the children are throwing a temper tantrum over a world that they refuse to understand.

Thanks.

I have found that it is the Independents who appreciate what I write. Conservatives hate it because I apparently don't tow the line that I am supposed to; and Liberals don't know what the hell to think of me.

Didnt the USA shape the world post 1945?

Why should the USA continue to perpetuate a fiction-- that Jerusalem is NOT the capital of Israel?

Re: U.N. General Assembly repudiates Trump on Jerusalem decision despite his threat of U.S. aid cuto

when I was very young a pastor told our congregation there would come a time in history in which the US & Israel will stand together, and the rest of the world will be on the other side of the coin.

are we there yet?

Because a negotiated settlement on the future of Jerusalem is a fundamental part of any peace deal, and has been the UN's and America's position for half a century.

This severely harms what slim chance of peace there was.

Yep. The UN is a worthless organization anyway and we shouldn't be paying as much as we are for it. They don't do anything useful for the world except sit in their ivory towers announcing anti-semetic platitudes: all while congratulating each other on the American taxpayer dime.

There has never been a question that Jerusalem will be part of Israel.

Re: U.N. General Assembly repudiates Trump on Jerusalem decision despite his threat of U.S. aid cuto

Didnt the USA shape the world post 1945?

Absolutely. Bretton Woods was in 1944, but Europe experienced the Marshall Plan in 1948. The Cold War didn't "officially" start until 1949; and that is when we doubled down in our competition with the communist ideology. It was economic, not political. In other words, it wasn't democracy versus communism as much as it was capitalism versus communism. We supported zero democracies in the third world and actually took a few out.

Why should the USA continue to perpetuate a fiction-- that Jerusalem is NOT the capital of Israel?

Because this is not about religion. During the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, Israel captured West Jerusalem. It later annexed it, which is illegal to do thanks to the international laws that we greatly created after World War II. You just stated that we shaped the world. International law is a part of that. In the mean time, Israelis have built on that annexed land in order to tap into the older laws that declared that construction means ownership. This is exactly how Americans pioneered and claimed territory across the U.S. in the nineteenth century.

You think that with the Islamist issues that Europe faces, that they were going to get behind something like this right now? The Arab governments who have to deal with their own mess?
We are only lucky that we have an ocean separating us from the mess. But this unnecessary, and merely political effort, places Americans (civilian and military) across the MENA in unnecessary danger. And for what, really? This just makes the whole mess that much harder.

There has never been a question that Jerusalem will be part of Israel.

The question of making Jerusalem into an international city has existed since the late 1940s when the state of Israel was created. It is only natural given how many wars have begun over such a ****ty piece of land.

Anywhere from 2 to 4 groups of mentally ill peoples arguing about whose imaginary friend made unverifiable things happen on a desertic parking lot.

No they're making their detractors look like fools....again

For example, you apparently think the UN should have the authority to dictate to the US. where they can and cannot locate their embassies.

Thats just retarded

Re: U.N. General Assembly repudiates Trump on Jerusalem decision despite his threat of U.S. aid cuto

Reduce the amount of money that we pay into the UN to the same level that the Russians do (about 77 million) and use the money saved to put into our aid program.

When you are ONLY thinking of your own interests its easy to forget people are dying in Jerusalem as a result of Trump's play for votes at home. He is the epitome of the "Ugly American" manipulating a foreign issue with HIS domestic agenda with complete disregard for the results outside its borders.

Secondly, moving the embassy is also stupid from the practical consideration, the Capital is in Tel Aviv as well as all the other consulates.

Three, there WERE on-going talks for joint occupancy of the city which were going VERY well before Trump opened his every lying mouth. That chance at peace is gone, so I guess his pals in the arms business are happy they will continue to have customers in Israel.

Who said I was ONLY thinking of my own interest? Who said Trump was? Could be for Israels interest too, they like the idea, and it's their own country.

And I am not to be intimidated by tribal cults wanting to kill people simply because of an embassy. They are doing it out of hate for Jewish people... and they can die for it if they want.

Because Jerusalem is NOT the capital of Israel. Simple. It is a divided and occupied city.

Get some information on the peace talks and get back to me. Israel is saying they like it because it is convenient for them to play to their conservatives.

Amazing, peace talks on-going for three to five years, making great progress and the American wrong don't even know they were going on. And so champion an idiot president who ruined them, and has cause unending riots and chaos...THAT kind of selfish thinking.

You ARE in favor of tribal cults warring, you are supporting the move that re-started the killing.

Too lazy to even read the UN resolution, you haven't even taken the time to find out WHY the entire UN spanked you.

So don't ****ing lecture me or anyone else about who wants what in the Middle East, you've proven you are ignorant and would never 'buy' the truth of the turmoil your country creates in the region.

Incorrect. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and houses their government legislature.

I don't care what the UN does though... I don't care what the Middle East wants, the middle east isn't one entity, it's made up of many terrible countries with conflicting interests ... If Israel wants the capital to be Jerusalem and the U.S. wants to move it's embassy there, then so be it. No one in the Middle East or Europe ought to give a crap, it's a sovereign nation and can do what it wants with it's capital.

Israel is a country that accepts people of all religions living together peacefully... it has the moral high ground here. Just because tribal Muslim cults hate Jewish people and you are worried they'll cause a fuss.... doesn't mean we or Israel is obligated to bow to them....actually we and Israel is obligated to do the opposite.

Don't really understand what all the fuss is about.

Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. I'm pretty sure Israel's PM knows what the capital of his country is:
Benjamin Netanyahu: "Israel completely rejects this preposterous resolution. Jerusalem is our capital. Always was, always will be."

"Peace talks" have been going on for what now ... 50 years or so?!?
Anybody who thinks we have ever been close or are close to a peaceful resolve is full of baloney.

For 25 or 30 years incoming US Presidents have promised to "recognize" Jerusalem as Israel's capital - but they never did.
For the first time a US president officially makes good on his predecessors' promises.

We have an embassy in Tel Aviv and a consulate in Jerusalem. Swap out the name plates on the buildings' entrances.

Any present violence from the Palestinians is no different than it has been since they "declared" themselves a nation.

Canada and Mexico abstained from voting - no backbone and already scared of ending up on Trump's naughty list. (grin)

I'm pretty sure Bibi will find a beautiful site in Jerusalem for our shiny, new embassy. :)
