US Embassy Location in Israel [W:52]

Betcha there's a reversal on this one. Or pushback in timeframe.

Nothing more than to poke a stick in the eye of the arab world. Nothing new here

There could easily be. On the other hand, the palestinians are not very helpful in any peace process. This increases the pressure. Maybe it will work. Nothing else has.

What on earth are you babbling about?

This move would only piss off the Palestinians, their allies, and pretty much everyone else on the planet.

But then again, Trump is the type that would support a corrupt Israeli government....

The Israelis have been even less helpful with all their new settlements so we should reward them? The only pressure that would allow a settlement must be on BOTH sides. I see nothing that would entice Israel to do anything but annex more land from the Palestinians.

This seems to be an action that will get significant blowback from a whole bunch of areas. The present administration reminds me of a willful child who is running around to different places kicking over hornet’s nests.

Trump informed Abbas about his intentions to move US embassy to Jerusalem - CNNPolitics

This is a good idea, for once. Put pressure on the Palestinians to make a deal (their threats to kill the "peace process" which is non-existent is laughable) with a reality-based approach to things. W est Jerusalem is Israeli and has been since 1948. There is zero justification for not recognizing it as Israel's capitol other than fear of rejectionist violence from the Arab world. Of course, we know what happens when you don't stand up to bullies. The Palestinians need to recognize their actions have consequences. This law was passed in the 90s to put Arafat's feat to the fire with respect to his rejectionism. He continued to be a rejectionist terrorist but yet the presidents and various international players thought consequences for his bad behaviour were problematic. They were wrong, now it is time for the Palestinians to see the consequences of their failures, terrorism and rejectionism.

Interestingly enough, we are starting to see the outlines of an actual solution to the conflict now that the Euros and various Palestinian apologists are not running the show and forcing the Palestinians up trees they can't climb down:

Column One: A credible peace plan, at last - Opinion - Jerusalem Post

but Tel Aviv seems better suited to be isreal's capital.

Wow. How is that any of your business? NYC is better suited to be the capitol of the US (as is LA, Chicago, St. Louis ...).

Israel's government has been in Jerusalem since 1948.

Jerusalem. The united, eternal capital of Israel. The embassy should be there.

should'nt the capital of isreal be the capitial of palestine?

I think this is a good move. Other nations should put their embassies in Jerusalem now too as it is Israel's capital. They shouldn't have to avoid putting it there to appease Palestine.

Everyone with any sense and access to Trump has no doubt explained to him that the timing is absolutely horrible, rotten, dangerous. No doubt Trump has ignored everyone and has decided to plow ahead against the advice of the few experts he has left.

Trump and the other unstable person with a nuclear button seem to be getting closer and closer to a nasty war. So Trump does what? He makes a very stupid decision to move forward now with the embassy in Jerusalem. WTF? Why now? It couldn't wait?

The timing of Trump's embassy decision could very easily throw petrol in the fire that is the Middle East. That of course could cause greater US involvement in the region as violence escalates. The US cannot easily afford to fight a war in Asia and the Middle East.

The status of Jerusalem has been arguably the most sensitive issue between Israel and the Palestinians for longer than I've been on this earth. Why President Trump would go out of his way to fan the flames of the conflict is beyond me. There's something very wrong with him, he's just not right in the head.

This has Bannon's 'burn it all down' fingerprints all over it.

Past presidents waived such a move for a rational reason ... which was to not get the US directly involved in I/P negotiable points.

I have no dog in this fight, but it does further inflame an already flammable situation for no overarching purpose that I can discern.

This is what happens when a president with zero governing experience assigns the I/P portfolio to his son-in-law who has zero diplomatic experience.

I think it will only piss off a certain type of person

The President is going out of his way to raise tensions unnecessarily for no immediate practical purpose. What could possibly be good about that?

Who cares who it pisses off. How does it benefit the US? How does it benefit US foreign policy? Why should my government dive into something that is a regional disagreement?

Why shouldn’t the president follow US law?

I think it will only piss off a certain type of person

So you are saying the Israeli government is NOT corrupt? That they have not attempted to influence public prosecutors from filing charges against the Prime Minister for corruption?

That a huge majority if not all countries, do not recognize Jerusalem as Israels capital.. means what?

Why shouldn’t the president follow US law?

Because it conflicts with International law for one, the other is the destabilizing that moving the embassy would cause.
