Democratic Senator Bernie Sanders said on Monday that Israeli occupation runs against both American and Israeli values and called for its end. "We need to end this 50-year-long occupation," he said.

"There is no question that we should be and will be Israel's very strong friend and partner in years to come," the Vermont senator told the 2017 J Street National Conference. "But we also need to recognize that the Israeli occupation runs contrary to American values and I believe, Israeli values as well."

The continued occupation and settlement construction, Sanders said, undermine peace efforts. Sanders applauded the administration of former President Barack Obama for its decision in December to abstain from vetoing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which censured Israeli settlement construction. "Those of us who support Israel, have got to tell the truth about policies that hurt the chances of a peaceful resolution," he said.

:applaud:applaudBernie has it right, again. This really stuck out to me: ""We can oppose the policies of President Trump without being anti-American. We can oppose the policies of Netanyahu without being anti-Israel. We can oppose the policies of Islamic extremists without being anti Muslim. Peace means security not only for every Israeli but also for every Palestinian."".

How?

This has always been a question never answered correctly

The question is how to do it. Having been attempted a number of times to install safe procedures to do so. They invariably ended in Israel being stopped by children decked out as bombs, rockets being lobbed across the borders et alias. Sure the left doesn't like Israel.

But say. How do you and the self proclaimed socialist propose doing it?

I have read lots of proposals. None seemed very realistic to the point that I really cannot think of a solution other than to remove populations from their present home areas. And even that can only work, if the UN is willing and made capable to believably assume security of all populations in the region.

Neither side sees the other as Humans ... we kinda have that same problem here in America.

This is a Global Humanitarian Problem, if we as Humans can't or won't see other follow Humans and equals, then this problem will never end.

At the end of the day, when it's all said and done, "MAN" will do whatever it takes to survive.

There's only so much Earth ... but one side doesn't recognize the other as having the right to exist, that's a HUGE problem.

Like remove the settlements from the west bank, build a wall on the Israeli side of the 1967 boarder and enforce a security zone on that side where anyone crossing it is shot and killed on site?

The Palestinians can use the boarder with Jordan to do trade and travel. No need to go into Israel, and no need for Israelis to go into the West Bank. No contact, between the two populations, no chance for car bombs within Israel from Palestinians as no vehicle traffic will cross the boarder. No chance for suicide bombers (except tunnels which can be detected using ground sonar and collapsed on the Israeli side of the boarder.

Peace but no harmony. Just separation and total lack of contact

Calling it an "Israeli occupation" is anti-Israel

The palestians should be allowed to have no offensive weapons including artillery and rockets

The palestians should be allowed to have no offensive weapons including artillery and rockets

And then so should the israelis

The Palestinians should have the same right to defend themselves and their country as Israel or Jordan

And then so should the israelis

The Palestinians should have the same right to defend themselves and their country as Israel or Jordan

Thats one way to look at it

but the Israelis are negotiating from a position of strength and the arabs are not.

The reason the palestinians do not have an independent state today is because they rejected the UN peace settlement in 1948

And then so should the israelis

The Palestinians should have the same right to defend themselves and their country as Israel or Jordan

Is vs. Ought. You can believe that all you like (I disagree) but it will never happen. The PA has more or less already conceded to a demilitarized state.

That is one example of what will no longer work.

Where should we draw the borders? What about Jerusalem? "Refugees"? How do we factor in Gaza? Access to holy sites? Further, I (and many others) don't believe a single Jew should have to leave Judea and Samaria, how do we deal with that?

My family lives in a 'settlement' of 8,000 people, and has lived there for decades. Where should they go?

Like with all solutions from socialists, we simply need to assume everything will work out ok. If we don't like how human nature will work with a socialist proposal, just assume that human nature isn't relevant. If a socialist solution opens up the potential for corruption, assume the socialist system is perfect enough to avoid any corruption.

If the inevitable result of withdrawal with no constraints on the Palestinians and their leadership is a further round of far more destructive and self-defeating war, just assume the problem away and problem solved.

And of course if it doesn't work, just blame people who were out to get the socialists or the fact that the solution wasn't socialist ENOUGH and if it was just MORE socialist everything would have gone as planned.

They don't have a country and as long as the election a terrorist organization as thier leaders they should not have that right.

You know that one of the first and most celebrated leaders of Israel was a terrorist?

Poor old Bernie needs to understand that the timing on ending the occupation has always been up to the palistineans. They simply need to stop commiting acts of terrorism, stop firing rockets into Israel and negotiate honestly with Israel.

Exactly. When the palistineans are ready to recognize Israel's right to exist and stop committing terrorist attacks against them, peace can be had.

Israel is not the aggressor. The Palistineans are the aggressor.

I've seen no signs that will happen in my life time.

I cou;d be wrong that hearts and minds will changes, but I won't bet on it.

I don't see it happening anytime soon. The real problem is that too many idiots in the international community are sending the palistineans the wrong message.
